Octopus Agave.
Agave vilmoriniana, Agave Family ( Agaveae or Agavaceae ), Octopus Agave. Also called: Amole, Agave edwardii, Agave houghii, Agave mayoensis, Agave eduardi.

In nature, the octopus agave prefers the cliffs of barrancas of southern Sonora through Sinaloa to Jalisco and Aguascalientes, typically between elevations of 1969 to 5,677 feet.

A thick-leafed evergreen succulent which dies after blooming. It has pointed leaves which form a basal rosette with a 3 - 5 foot height and a spread of 5 - 6 feet. It has a slow growth rate.

Can take full sun in Phoenix or Tucson. It does not take reflected sun.


Quick Notes:

Height: 3 to 5 feet tall. Spreads about 5 to 6 feet.

Flowers: Its flowers, are greenish - yellow on a large spike 10 to 12 feet tall. Then, about 60 - 90 days later, baby plantlets form and cling to the stalk until after the mother plant has died. The plantlets then fall to the ground and take root.

Flowering Time: Phoenix Arizona, Mid March.

Leaves: The leaves symmetrical, spineless rosettes of thick, succulent, dark green leaves over 3 ft long. They have a wavey appearance like the upraised arms of an ocotopus. They are smooth, curved, with tiny rough margins.

Found: Native of NW Mexico. Southern Sonora, through Sinaloa, to Jalisco, and Aguascalientes.

Hardiness: Will freze past the low 20 �F' !

Soil pH requirements:
6.6 to 7.5 (neutral)
7.6 to 7.8 (mildly alkaline)
7.9 to 8.5 (alkaline)

Sun Exposure:
Full Sun

Elevation: 0 - 4,600 Feet. In Arizona. In Mexico, typically between elevations of 1,969 to 5,677 feet.

Habitat: It grows well in sand, sandy loam, clay and other heavy soils. It needs good drainage and aeration. It is remarkably tolerant of alkali.
