Formed by Horse Mesa Dam; and about 65 miles east from Phoenix; Apache Lake is a spectacular site for boating, fishing, water skiing, hiking, camping, and all other forms of outdoor recreation. We first fished in Apache Lake in 1946 when taken there by our fathers after they returned from WW II. We recall that Apache Lake had the very best clear water and excellent fishing back then and it still does. A Google Earth Map search marks the center of the Apache Lake Marina at 33o 34' 29.35" N 111o 15' 15.04" W .

Apache Lake is the second largest SRP lake, exceeded by Roosevelt Lake upriver. It is surrounded by beautiful scenery since it is surrounded by the Superstition Wilderness and the Three Bar Wildlife Area.

The lake is a narrow lake, 17 miles long, with 41 miles of shoreline, and secluded coves; which are home to abundant wildlife. Visitors could see; eagle, javelina, big horn sheep, mule deer, snakes, lizards, chuckwalla, and many desert plants, including the saguaro, mesquite, and ocotillo.

The main fish caught in Apache Lake are: Walleyes, crappie, bass, small mouth bass, large mouth bass, bluegill, catfish, and red ear sunfish.

Its temperatures range from lows of about 25 degrees F. during the months of December and January; to highs that may exceed 115 degrees F. from July through September. The annual precipitation usually ranges from about 2 to 8 inches.

There is access to paved boat launching sites at the Burnt Corral Recreation Site, and the Apache Lake Marina.

Campgrounds are located at the Burnt Corral Recreation Site and the Apache Lake Marina. There are several shoreline access areas as well. The Burnt Corral Recreation Site is handicap accessible with toilets and drinking water. It has 17 spaces for trailers which are less than 17 feet long. The area is open all year long.

You'll need a Tonto Pass to access the boat ramp at Burnt Corral Recreation Site. Their fees are $6.00 per vehicle and $4.00 per watercraft. Contact the Tonto Basin Ranger Station with any questions about permits.

The Apache Lake Marina and Resort is one mile from the main highway and seven miles southwest of the Burnt Corral Recreation Site. It features a motel, gas station, coffee shop, picnic supplies and a trailer park for 12 units. A boat ramp and dock are at the resort, and a county sheriff's aid station is nearby.

The Three Bar Wildlife Area is located across the lake from the Apache Lake Marina and Resort and it provides a scenic spot for photographers.

GETTING THERE:
There are two ways of getting to Apache Lake: Take the Apache Trail for 18 miles from Apache Junction past Canyon Lake to Tortilla Flat. Then travel for another 15 miles, some of which is unpaved, to your destination.
Or, if you're coming from Globe, take Highway 88 northwest about 35 miles to Roosevelt Dam, then turn south along the Apache Trail (still Highway 88) about five miles to Apache Lake.

If you are planning to visit Apache Lake you may need to purchase some outdoor gear, boating equipment, or fishing gear.
