Compatible Vegetables

To grow a successful bountiful vegetable garden, it's wise to understand the growing conditions required by the plants you use. By following the simple principles of companion planting and placing compatible plants together, you'll maximize space in the garden, provide similar growing conditions and help protect against invading pests.

Planning:
Decide which vegetables you would like to grow. Use a chart of good and bad companions for vegetables and combine compatible plants together.

Place taller plants (corn, sunflowers) in the back of the garden, then work your way forward with the smaller plants. Planting companion flowers at the front will beautify the garden.

Physical Aspect:
One benefit of companion planting is the ability to grow a large variety of vegetables in a small space. Three examples of companions are what is traditionally known as the "Three Sisters": corn, squash and beans. Native Americans planted this combination of plants together as a means of growing a balanced diet. The tall corn stalks provide a support system for the climbing beans and the squash provides a ground cover to protect the corn and beans from weeds.

Growing Conditions:
Consider the sun/shade requirements for your plants. A great example of companion planting is to pair a taller sun-loving plant to shade-leaf lettuce.

Vegetables require water to grow and lots of it. This is not a good place to plant any succulents or plants with low-water requirements.

Pest Control:
Onion plants repel insects.

Plants such as chives, garlic, onions and select herbs produce offensive chemicals or smells that repel insects and disease. Using companion plants naturally lower pest problems in the garden without chemical intervention.

Insects such as lady bugs, praying mantis, spiders, wasps and several species of flies are beneficial to the garden. The small flowers of carrot, dill, parsley and coriander have strong fragrances that attract these beneficial insects.

Good Combinations:
Use some of these companion plantings for good combinations in your garden; ie..basil planted next to the tomatoes help to repel tomato hornworms. Marigolds planted in the garden are a popular secret among gardeners. Nasturtiums planted next to the squash will help to repel squash bugs. Plant mint, thyme or chamomile to control cabbage moths. Planting a border of thyme or lavender along the garden discourages slugs from entering.

Plant dill next to cucumber; it repels aphids and spider mites but attracts beneficial insects. Dill also stimulates a better flavor in cucumbers as the two plants mature.

Bad Combinations:
There are also bad combinations to consider. Do not place onions with beans or peas. Strong herbs should not be planted near cucumbers. Separate the tomato and corn plants; they do not make good companions.

The potato plant does not do well with cucumber, pumpkin, squash family, sunflower, turnip or fennel.

Benefits:
The careful planning of your garden according to vegetable compatibility will bring the rewards of a full harvest of fresh vegetables and flowers to be enjoyed in the kitchen or summer outdoor cookouts.

The guides listed below are fairly thorough but not complete. You may wish to experiment a little on your own. Folks that do, seem to keep coming up with new combinations.

For Example: While touring in Peru we noticed that Asparagus and Corn grow well together. Potatoes also do well nearby.
