The Blythe Intaglios or Blythe Geoglyphs are a group of giant figures found on the ground near Blythe, California in the Colorado Desert.

Scientifically, they bear the name anthropomorphic geoglyphics.

But, they are more commonly known as the Blythe Intaglios or Blythe Geoglyphs. They have also been commonly called the Blythe Giants and they are better known to the locals as Intaglios.

The Giant Figures, known to archeologists as Intaglios,( pronounced "In-tal-yos"), is an Italian term which refers to an engraving art process where dark stones are moved away from a lighter colored soil or rock formation underneath the dark stones.

Geoglyphs are classified as rock art, which also includes pictographs and petroglyphs. Pictographs are rock paintings while petroglyphs are rock engravings. Pictographs are generally found in coastal mountain ranges while petroglyphs are more often found in the desert.

On the other hand, Intaglios are often located near the Colorado River. Thus the term Intaglios is the preferred term to use.

While the best-known intaglios in the world are the Nazca Lines in Peru, there are over 300 intaglios in the American Southwest and adjacent regions of Mexico. The best known of the American intaglios are the Blythe Intaglios, located about 3/10 of a mile west of the Colorado River, about 15 miles north of Blythe, California, and situated on two low mesas or terraces in California.

There are 5 total figures here in 3 separate viewing areas. When you enter on the dirt road, two intagliios will be to your right about a quarter of a mile down the road. There is a designated parking area, and then it is a three-minute hike to the fenced-off area around one of the intaglios. There is another intaglio about a half mile further down the road to the right with its own parking area. The last two figures are to the south of the road in between the two parking areas. They are just under a half mile hike south from the road.

The intaglios are best viewed from the air, and that is exactly how they were discovered. When in 1932, a local pilot, George Palmer was flying over the Colorado River into Blythe when he accidentally spotted the formations below him.

In fact, there are several You Tube Videos that you can view, where people have used drones to photograph the Intaglios. We suggest you take a look on You Tube.

The intaglios were created by scraping away top layers of darker rocks or pebbles to reveal a lighter soil beneath.

Most scientists believe the intaglios were probably created by the Mojave and/or Quechan Indians, but no one knows for sure. Was it the ancient inhabitants of the Earth, or something more supernatural? Aliens? Yes, there are several theories.

The dates of origin remain a mystery but the figures are believed to between 450 to 2000 years old (geoglyphs are hard to date). According to the Native Americans of the lower Colorado River area, their oral histories believe the human figures represent the creator of all life ( Mastamho ). The animal figures may represent one of two mountain lions who helped in the creation ( Hatakulya ) . Sacred ceremonial dances were held in the area in ancient times to honor the creation.

The majority of the Blythe geoglyphs are located 16 miles (26 km) north of Blythe, California, off of Highway 95, at the Interstate 10 exit. Then travel down a well marked dirt road west of Highway 95.

An historical marker placed by the California Department of Public Works, Division of Highways, commemorates the site. Chain link fence surrounds several of the figures.

The exact GPS Position to the entrance is: N33 48 00.0 W114 32 00.0 .
