We chose a sailing tour of the Bras D'or Lakes at Baddeck, Nova Scotia with Amoeba Sailing Tours; which is a small family business operating from the beautiful resort village of Baddeck, on Cape Breton Island. They have been giving sailing tours for over 20 years and countless people have enjoyed the warm hospitality and the entertaining narrative given by Captain John Bryson, Owner/ Operator of the Amoeba. Amoeba Sailing Tours offers passengers a unique opportunity to sail the Bras dOr Lakes near Baddeck from the deck of a 67 foot Schooner. The Amoeba is a real sailboat with a black hull and golden teak and white sails that can be seen working with the wind. The Amoeba has five sails, and is a Staysail Schooner with a Wishbone Rig. She has a main sail, 2 staysails, a jib, and a Wishbone. Her Maiden Voyage was on September 6th, 1977. Her overall length is 67 feet. Her beam is 15.3 feet. Her draft is 8.3 feet. She weighs 36 tons (including 12 tons ballast in the keel). Her length of waterline is 48 feet. Her hull speed is 8 1/2 knots' Her hull and deck materials are a Ferro Cement hull, and a teak deck.
Sights to see include:
Bald Eagles: Cape Breton is home to hundreds of pairs of nesting bald eagles. We were able to see these wonderful birds on our tour. There are several nests nearby that can be viewed from the Amoeba. The eagles have even been trained to circle the boat while we were sailing, because they know that Captain John Bryson will sometimes throw them a fish. As they dove into the water to retrieve the fish, it made it possible for us to have incredible photo opportunities. Baddeck Shoreline: From the comfort of the Schooner Amoeba, we enjoyed the beautiful Baddeck shoreline and the lush trees and flowers. We had wonderful views of the Bell Museum, the Bell Bay Golf Course, Alexander Graham Bell's mansion Beinn Bhreagh, the surrounding communities of Washabuck, and Boularderie Islands, Kempt Head and Spectacle Island (Bird Sanctuary). This was probably the highlight of our entire tour.
How To Reach Captain John Bryson:
We sailed on the afternoon of October 06,2010.
