Ernie Pyle was a great uplifting influence to the men of the USS Cabot.

Ernie is still spoken of in an admiring tone when the old shipmates get together.

On November 25th Ernie was on board after the Japanese used their last chance effort weapon, the Kamikaze, against the Cabot.

Two Kamikaze hit the Cabot within a space of about three minutes.

Ernie immortalized the drama of this attack in his WWII Clasic book, "The Last Chapter."

Thirty five men were killed and 67 were wounded in the attack. Even though the ship had 97 holes in her hull and massive damage to her hanger and flight decks, she stayed on line and continued the battle.

Ernie was so impressed by her men and her ability to stay in the battle; that he gave her the nickname that was to stay with her throughout her career "The Iron Woman."

Ernie was killed by sniper fire after machine gunners attacked him on Ie Shima, April 18, 1945. He is missed by many.
