Toothpick Cactus.

The toothpick cactus (Stetsonia coryne) is a species of cactus and the sole species of its genus (Stetsonia). The plant originates from the low northwest deserts of Argentina and Bolivia. A rare xeroscape plant in Phoenix. Can take full sun but does best in some shade inder a nurse tree when very young.

Height: Height from 20 - 30 feet.
Stems: 8 - 12 inches in diameter.
Flowers: Its flowers are white. They mostly bloom at night and and by morning they close up again.
Blooming Time: May - July.
Fruit & Seeds: The fruits are large and yellow in late winter. They have an edible, white pulp.
Leaves or Segments: Stems are bluish-gray with 8 to 9 rounded ribs, shallow grooves. Has felted areoles, each bearing 2 to 5 inch long spines.
Fruit: Green spineless edible fruit, 1-1/4 inches in diameter dry when ripe.
Seeds: Black oval - about 1/32 inch in length.
Found: Lower elevations where water is available. It grows well in sand, sandy loam.. It needs good drainage and aeration. It nature it favors southern facing slopes between elevations of 984 - 2,625 feet.
