The Carlsbad Caverns National Park is a United States National Park in the Guadalupe Mountains in southeastern New Mexico. The primary attraction of the park for most visitors is it's show cave, called Carlsbad Caverns. Carlsbad Caverns includes a large cave chamber, called the "Big Room," a natural limestone chamber which is almost 4,000 feet long, & 625 feet wide, it is also about 350 feet high at the highest point. It is the third largest chamber in North America and the seventh largest in the world. Visitors to the cave can hike in on their own by way of Carlsbad Caverns natural entrance, or take the elevator; which is the exit for everyone. The elevator actually goes directly to the Underground Lunchroom some 750 feet below. Carlsbad Caverns peak visitation period typically occurs on the weekends, following Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. The park entrance is located on US Highway 62 / 180 approximately 18 miles southwest of Carlsbad, New Mexico.
How To Get There:
To access Carlsbad Caverns National Park's only entrance road, New Mexico Highway 7, turn north from US Hwy 62 / 180 at Whites City, New Mexico - which is 16 miles southwest of Carlsbad, NM and 150 miles northeast of El Paso, Texas. The entrance road stretches a scenic 7-mile (11.3 km) from the park gate at Whites City to the Visitor Center and cavern entrance. The address for the park's Visitor Center is 727 National Parks Higway, Carlsbad, NM, even though it's located 23 miles from the town. Carlsbad is served by Greyhound and TNM&O; bus lines. New Mexico Airlines offers passenger service between Carlsbad and Albuquerque. Major airlines serve Roswell and Albuquerque, New Mexico; and El Paso, Lubbock and Midland, Texas. Rental cars and taxi service are available from the airport in Carlsbad.

There is no lodging available within Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Camping is allowed only in the backcountry, at least a half-mile from roads and parking lots, and requires a free permit which is issued at the park visitor center. The nearest hotel and private campground is in Whites City, just at the entrance to the park. Whites City is privately owned and may be contacted at 800-CAVERNS or (575)785-2291. The town of Carlsbad, New Mexico has numerous lodging, campgrounds, and dining options. It is located 20 miles north-east of the park, on highway 62/180.

And if you are coming from outside of New Mexico, you could fly into nearest major airport to to Carlsbad, New Mexico which is Cavern City Air Terminal (CNM / KCNM). This airport is about 6 miles from the center of Carlsbad, NM. You could then then rent a car. There are many hotels and motels in both areas and if you need a place to stay; Priceline.com can arrange that for you.
