Cascalote Trees.
 We wish to thank Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia for some of the information on this page. We share images and information with Wikipedia. A large irregular evergreen shrub which can be trained to become a small deciduous tree. It may become an evergreen in warmer areas. Attracts hummingbirds. Spikes of solid yellow clusters on branch terminals; flowers spikes up to 12 inches long; blooming early spring through summer. Another shrub - tree called Mexican Bird Of Paradise ( Caesalpinia mexicana ) looks almost the same except it is usually a shrub.

Height:   Up To 12 feet tall, 10 - 12 feet spread.
 
Trunk:    Greenish stems, noticeable lenticils, spineless; a slender trunk.
 
Flowers:   Spikes of yellow clusters on branch terminals; with flowers up to 12 inches long.
 
Blooming Time:    Late February - September.
 
Seed Pod:   Tan pod, persistent on branches unless removed.
 
Seeds:   Elliptical flattened shiny dark brown, almost black seeds.
 
Leaves:   Bipinnately compound leaf. alternate, round leaflets.
 
Found:   Native to the Pacific Coast of Mexico in Sonora. The USDA claims it is native to the USA (TX).
 
Elevation:   Native below 1,349 feet. Usually about 400 feet.
 
Hardiness:    Numerous people have reported this is not frost hardy. We know of these dying in Phoenix from winter frosts.

Habitat:  Sandy desert washes, dry slopes and mesas to 3,000 feet. Also used for xeriscape landscaping in lower elevations in the Phoenix and Tucson areas of Arizona.
