Eriastrum eremicum ssp. eremicum, a dicot, is an annual herb that is native to Arizona and is also found outside of Arizona, but is confined to western North America. Eriastrum eremicum ssp. eremicum is a subspecies in the genus Eriastrum (woollystar) which contains 14 species and belongs to the family of the Polemoniaceae (Phlox Family).

Height: 2 - 12 inches high & about 4 - 10 inches wide.
Flowers: Funnel-shaped, slightly bilateral, and blue. Blooming from April to June. The flowers are arranged in an usually flat-topped or convex flower cluster in which the main axis and each branch end in a flower that opens before the flowers below or to the side of it called a cyme. These cymes are woolly in appearance. Corolla is about 5/8 inch long, with 3 upper lobes & 2 lower lobes, each with a yellow spot at their base. The stamen protruding from the tube, slightly bent toward the lower lobes.
Flowering Time: Late - March to June.
Leaves: Green, simple 1/4 inch to 2 inch leaves. The leaves are arranged opposite one another. They are pinnately 5 - 9 liniar divided lobes with entire margins.
Found: Native to California, Nevada, Utah, & the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, and Mexico.
Elevation: 0 to 6,000 Feet.
Habitat: Creosote Bush Scrub, Joshua Tree Woodland, Pinyon-Juniper Woodlands.
Miscellaneous: Sometimes this flower blooms so much that it covers the desert with a blue mat. Photos taken: April 03, 2012. Peeples Valley, Arizona.
