Inveraray Castle: When you visit Edinburgh, the Edinburgh Castle dominates the city of Edinburgh. For over one thousand years of history it has sat on top of the famous Edinburgh rock which was created by the natural forces of the earth in about 340 million BC. It is estimated that its first early inhabitants of the area, made their first settlements at the rock during the Bronze-Age, as long ago as 850 BC. There is also evidence of other settlements in about 600 AD. It is thought that they settled there for defensive purposes. Since people have always sought a safe refuge, the volcanic rock that forms the base of Edinburgh Castle, has always afforded the ultimate safe and defensive position for Edinburgh. As time went foreward and the City of Edinburgh grew outwards from the Castle rock, the first houses in Edinburgh were then built upon the area in front of Edinburgh Castle, which is now known as the Lawnmarket, and then the house construction continued down the High Street and The Cannongate towards the Royal Palace of Holyrood House. These streets collectively form a single street known as The Royal Mile. The Royal Mile acquired its name over the ages as Scottish and English kings, and other royalty have travelled back and forth between the Palace of Holyrood House and the Edinburgh Castle. Inveraray Castle is a unique architecture incorporating the Baroque, Palladian and Gothic designs. Inveraray Scottish Castle was the first of its size and type to be built. It features French influenced conical spires above its stone castelated towers. The design and construction of Inveraray Castle began in 1720 from a sketch prepared by Sir John Vanbrugh, who was the architect of Blenheim Palace and Castle Howard, for the 2nd Duke of Argyll. Sir John Vanbrugh died six years later and his design was further developed by Roger Morris who started its construction in 1746 and worked with William Adam, the most distinguished architect in Scotland. Roger Morris and William Adam both passed away in 1748 and William Adam's sons John and Robert saw the project to completion, 28 years after its beginning. And it was finially accepted by the 5th Duke of Argyll in 1789. The Castle has been owned by the Campbell Family who first arrived in Argyll as part of a royal expedition in c.1220. The first owner was John Campbell, the 2nd Duke of Argyll, & 1st Duke of Greenwich.
