The Egyptologist Auguste Mariette (1821-1881) founded the Cairo Egyptian Museum in 1859 with the help of the Vicroy Of Egypt, Said Pasha. It was originally housed in Bulag, then moved to Giza in 1891. It was then moved to Median at-Tahrir (Liberation Square) in 1902. The tomb of the Pharaoh King Tut (Tutankhamun) was later discovered by Carter in 1922 in the Valley Of The Kings and its great wealth was brought into the light of day. All of this wealth is now on display on an entire second floor of the Egyptian Musium in Cairo. It is a must see display! Due to the Arab Spring; (literally the Arabic Rebellions) (a revolutionary wave of demonstrations and protests occurring in the Arab world that began on Friday, 17 December 2010.) There have been many concerns about the safety of the Egyptian Museum. That is due to the fact that the museum is located near some of the most intense of the mass anti-government protests sweeping the capital. In one instance, looters were headed toward the Museum and before the army arrived, young Egyptians some armed with truncheons grabbed off the police created a human chain at the museum's front gate to prevent looters from making off with any of its priceless artifacts. The would-be looters only vandalized two mummies, ripping their heads off. They also cleared out the museum gift shop. The prized King Tutankhamun exhibit had not been damaged and was safe Fears of looters have prompted authorities elsewhere to take precautions to secure antiquities at other sites. The military closed the pyramids on the outskirts of Cairo to tourists, and armored personnel carriers could be seen outside the famed archaeological site. The Egyptian Museum, cites a 90% decline in tourists. A new "Grand Egyptian Museum" (GEM), also known as the Giza Museum, is planned to replace the Cairo Egyptian Museum. It will be the largest archaeological museum in the world. It had been scheduled to open in 2013. Now, due to unrest in Egypt, it is scheduled for August of 2015. Who really knows? The "Grand Egyptian Museum" will be sited on 50 hectares (120 acres) of land approximately two kilometers from the Giza pyramids and is part of a new master plan for the Giza Plateau.

The Cairo International Airport (IATA: CAI, ICAO: HECA) is the busiest airport in Egypt and is located to the north-east of the city around 15 km from the business area of the city. Cairo International is the second busiest airport in Africa with over 65 airlines using the Cairo airport (including charter airlines) and 9 cargo airlines. With the assimilation of EgyptAir into Star Alliance in July 2008 the airport has the potential to be a major hub with its positioning between Africa, the Middle East and Europe. In 2008, the airport served 14,360,175 passengers and it is one of the top 100 airports in the world. The airport handles both domestic and international flights, and is open 24 hours a day.
