Baha Ruby Fairy Duster.
We wish to thank Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia for some of the information on this page. We share images and information with Wikipedia. A low-growing evergreen shrub. Native to the sandy washes, flats, and hillsides in the Cape region of Baja California. A very popular landscape plant in Arizona.
Quick Notes:
Height: 1 - 3 feet tall, with a spread of 3 - 4 feet.
Leaves: Bipinnately compound, 1 - 1.5 inchs long 1/2 inches across; with fern shaped leaflets, 0.5 inch wide, 2 to 4 pairs of pinnae, each with 5 to 10 pairs of leaflets, 0.12 inch up to 0.2 inch long.
Flowers: Red 2" flowering balls, formed by the long pink filaments of 20 or more stamens emerging from small clustered flowers.
Flowering Time: February - May. Sometimes again in the fall.
Stems/Trunks: Upright branches, the stems are light gray growing woodier with age.
Seeds: Dehiscent pods which pop open and eject seeds for a great distance at maturity.
Found: The USDA claims that Calliandra californica is native to the USA (AZ, CA, NM, TX). In Arizona it is said to be native to all counties except Navajo, & Apache. In Mexico it is native to the states of Baja Norte, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Nuevo Leon, San Luis Potosi, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tamaulipas, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Chiapas, Jalisco, Mexico, Oaxaca, Puebla, & Queretaro.

Elevation: 0 - 4,500 Feet. (Said To Grow At This Elevation). My experience is that it does not!
Habitat: Ornamental in lower elevations or Arizona. Sandy washes. Introduced from tropical America. An ideal Xeriscape Landscape Plant throughout lower elevations (under 2,500 feet) in Arizona.
Miscellaneous: Flowering Photos Taken March 21, 2003 in Glendale area. Used as a xeriscape landscaping plant in the Phoenix and Tucson areas.
