(Pronounced Jew-lee-ah-nah) Lima, Peru contains several huacas, or sacred places. Located in the district of Miraflores, located at General Borgo�o Street. Huaca Pullana is a sacred, ceremonial center, dating from earliest stages of the Lima culture in 200 - 700 AD. The "Huaca Pucllana" was built around 500 AD. "Pucllana" is one of the most important ancient monuments in Lima. Huaca Pucllana is located in the middle of a modern residential area of Miraflores and it is resisting the urban growth and reminding the Lime�os every day about their archaeological patrimony. The Huaca Pucllana complex consists of the archaeological ruins, a small site museum, an area for workshops, a small souvenir shop, and a renouned restaurant. Huaca Pucllana, is made from small handmade, sun-dried brick, is 22 meters high. It is divided into two areas, one for ceremonial and another for administration. Huaca Pullana has a pyramidal shape, dedicated to the god Pachac�mac. The Huaca Juliana, or Huaca Pucllana', is a great adobe and clay pyramid, built of seven staggering platforms. It takes its name from the Quechua word �pucllay,� meaning �game,� which in its entirety can be translated as �a place for ritual games.� It served as an important ceremonial and administrative center for the advancement of the Lima Culture, a society which developed in the Peruvian Central Coast between the years of 200 AD and 700 AD. With the intended purpose of having the elite clergymen (whom politically governed several valleys in the area) express their complete religious power and ability to control the use of all the natural water resources (saltwater and freshwater) of the zone, a Great Pyramid was constructed in the Huaca. As a whole, the structure is surrounded by a plaza, or central square, that borders the outer limits, and by a large structured wall dividing it into two separate sections. In one section there were benches and evidence of deep pits where offerings of fish and other marine life took place in order to attain the favor of the gods. The other section is an administrative area. This area contains various small clay structures and huts made of adobe�with some walls still standing�whose function seemed to be to act as the courtyards and patios of the enclosure which is over 500 meters in length, 100 in width and 22 in height. Other remains have been uncovered belonging to the Wari Culture (500 AD-900 AD), which was a direct influence on the Lima Culture society towards the ends of its time period. Of particular note are the remains of the �Se�or de los Unkus� (The Lord of the Unkus), which belonged to the first tomb within the ceremonial center to have been discovered completely intact. This tomb holds three separate burial shrouds containing the remains of three adults�two of which have masks�and those of a sacrificed child. When you visit Huaca Pucllana, you will be impressed by this an amazing site Archaeological Complex located in the middle of a well built up residential area in the Miraflores District of Lima. All visitors are required to join a guided tour, which was included in the admission fee of 10 soles.You are guided around the inside of the site by an English or Spanish speaking guide. Our guide spoke perfect English. In addition to this amazing site Archaeological Complex, there are some Peruvian animals and plants on site, including the famous hairless Peruvian dog! Our tour lasted about 1 hour. The staff were all very friendly and the ambience of the restaurant is also nice. As you take the guided tour of the Archaeological Complex, you will see dig sites where mummies were found. Then, when you get to the top of the pyramid, you will also see a nice view of the city of Lima. In addition, you can watch the construction workers restoring the site, brick by brick, by hand. The on-site museum exhibits an interesting collection of ceramics, textiles, tools, artefacts and remains of plants and animals that were found at the "Huaca Pucllana". With a guided tour around the archaeological complex you can experience the life of the ancient population first hand. It is certainly worth the $/. 10. (Ten Soles). If you are hungry, after such a rich cultural experience, taste some of the typical Peruvian dishes at the on site, high class restaurant, Restaurant Huaca Pucllana. The site of "Huaca Pucllana" was clearly separated by a large wall (running in a north - south direction) into two different parts: �The administrative sector and the urban zone which were located towards the east of this wall with places presumably used for public meetings, to discuss control and improvement of production. A number of small buildings, squares, ramps, patios and storage rooms completed this part. �The ceremonial sector towards the western part of the wall, which contained the pyramid (made of adobe bricks, 500 metres long, more than 100 metres wide, 22 metres high) and adjacent places. Priests conducted here religious ceremonies honoring the Gods and ancestors. Archaeologists at "Huaca Pucllana" have discovered textiles, decorated ceramics, bones, stone tools and remains of alpacas, guinea pigs, ducks, fish and other molluscs, corn, pumpkins, beans and fruits like cherimoya, l�cuma, pacae, guayaba. These findings at "Huaca Pucllana", have given us vital information about the life of the first "Lime�os". Their houses were built near plantations or close to irrigation channels and were typically made of reed and adobe. Their day to day labors included fishing, working on plantations or farms, gathering and hunting, the manufacturing of handicrafts, textiles, basketry, and tools for agriculture and fishing. Some of their cooperative operations were to construct and maintain irrigation channels. Very simple burial sites, with missing weapons among the burial objects, seem to indicate that the population lived a very basic and peaceful live. Their textiles were simple as well, made of wool from alpaca or vicu�a. Artistic pottery included ceremonial jars decorated with snakes and fish in black, red and white. The pyramid and walls of the administrative complex are an engineering marvel in themselves. The site was built using handmade mud bricks which were then dried in the sun. No molds were used in the making of bricks for the original construction. These bricks were then stacked in library book fashion with small spaces between them. This served to absorb the shocks from the many earthquakes in this area and this construction resulted in minimal damage to the structures when the earthquakes occurred. There are no chambers or passage ways inside the pyramid itself. All ceremonies and burials were done in the plazas of the structure. One of the most interesting ceremonies performed on the plazas was the "pottery breaking ritual". The Lima people would spend great amounts of time making large vessels and decorating them with symbols from the sea like the shark. Then in an act of devotion they would break the large vessels with a stone and symbolically sacrifice their labor in making them to the gods. With the arrival of the "Wari" who overthrow all other cultures at the coast of Peru around 700 AD, "Pucllana" lost its importance and was abandoned. During the Wari period the pyramid was used as burial place for their notabilities. Later those graves were destroyed by the "Ichma" (local residents who worshipped Pachac�mac) who tried to impose their own culture. Later on, "Huaca Pucllana" was only used for performing sacrifices and worshipping. By the time the Incas arrived in the region "Pucllana" already was considered a "�aupallaqta" (an old sacred village). We visited Huaca Pucllana or Juliana, on our own, by taking a taxi from our hotel in Miraflores to the site, on the morning, of March 28, 2011 at about 11:08 AM.
