Kanaracay is located along the shore of Huacarpay Lake. Huacarpay Lake is best know now for the wonderful views of birds that lovers of nature enjoy. Urpicancha means 'field of wild doves' in quechua. These terraced ruins on the east banks of the Waton Lagoon, a permanent 8.2 metre deep part of the Huacarpay Lagoons, are believed to originally have been built by the Wari pre-Inca culture, later occupied by the Inca, and may have been the birthplace of the Inca Huascar who fought a war against his half- brother Atahualpa. Huacarpay is the birthplace of the Inca Huascar. The ruins of his palace are situated on the south western edge of the biggest of the three lakes forming Huacarpay. According to the archeological surveys existent in the area, it was estimated by Johan Reinhard and the local INC representatives that most probably archeological remains within the lagoon should be situated in the southern half of the biggest lake of Huacarpay, right in front of Huascars birthplace. There were no specific legends indicating archeological remains in this lake.
We were at the ruins of Kanaracay at about 1:36 PM on the afternoon of March 23, 2011.
