Knoll Lake is located northeast of its sister-lakes of Woods Canyon and Willow Creek Lakes on the Mogollon Rim, in Leonard Canyon, Arizona, a few miles north of the Mogollon Rim. Its water comes to it from Clear Creek. It gets its name from a rocky island or knoll located in the middle of the lake. Knoll Lake is under the care of the Blue Ridge Ranger District of the Coconino National Forest. The lake covers approximately 75 acres and is about 50 feet deep. It is located 108 miles southeast of Flagstaff and 21 miles or 30 minutes from Payson on paved and graveled Forest Roads. Its elevation is 7,340 feet.

The sites charge a $10 fee during the Memorial Day to Labor Day season. A road and hiking trail leads down to the boat ramp. Anglers come mostly to fish for rainbow trout, but you can also catch brown trout, and brook trout. Hiking trails are nearby. It is a secluded forest camp area, surrounded by ponderosa pines, oak, and douglas fir, and with a picturesque island in its middle, Knoll Lake also provides a scenic setting in which to enjoy your canoe or other small boat.

If you wish, you could always travel from Knoll Lake to tour the nearby Mogollon Rim. This two thousand foot escarpment marks the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau and drops from cool highlands to low deserts in a picturesque, plunge. You could also visit the nearby restaurants in Payson.

The facilities at Knoll Lake are maintained by the Coconino National Forest Division of the USDA Forest Service. It is closed to visitors during the winter months. Its campground season is from mid-May to mid-September.

There is one small boat ramp at the lake. Boat motors are restricted to electric motors only. Tents and small motor homes and trailers under 32' are permitted. Pets must always be restrained or on a leash. No horses allowed in the campground. Licensed motorbikes may only be used for entering or leaving campsite. The length of stay is limited to 14 Days.
