The City of David or Ir David, is the Israeli name for the oldest settled neighborhood of Jerusalem & a major archaeological site. The City of David is the birthplace of the city of Jerusalem, the place where King David established his kingdom, and where much of the history of the People of Israel was written. The City of David is on a narrow ridge running south from the Temple Mount in the predominantly Palestinian neighborhood of Silwan in East Jerusalem. The City of David was a walled city during the Bronze Age and, according to tradition, it is the place where King David built his palace and established his capital. The City of David had a defensive advantage, due to its position with the Tyropoeon Valley to its west & by the Hinnom valley to the south, and the Kidron Valley on the east. During the ancient pre-Israelite period, the City of David land area was separated from the site of twhere theTemple Mount would be built up, by the uninhabited land of Ophel, which became the seat of the Israelite government under Israelite rule. Then, during the reign of Hezekiah, the walls of the city were expanded westward, enclosing a previously unwalled suburb in the area now known as the Old City of Jerusalem, west of the Temple Mount. Nahal Kidron, which separated the City Of David or Ophel, from today's Old City, lies hidden beneath the debris of centuries. During the nineteenth century, they started archaeological exploration of the area & several sites are available for public viewing. Most notable is the water supply system which drew its water from the Gihon Spring which lies on the Ophel's eastern slope. It is generally considered that the Gihon Spring was the reason that the City was built at this location. Most notable are Hezekiah's Tunnel (a water supply system, where the Siloam inscription was found), Warren's Shaft (an earlier structure, postulated by some to have been a water supply system), and the Pool of Siloam (the presently extant Byzantine-era pool, and the recently discovered Second Temple-period pool). The sites of the Gihon Spring and of the Pool of Siloam have been incorporated into an archaeological park open to the public. Visitors can wade through Hezekiah's Tunnel, through which the waters of the ancient Gihon Spring still flow.
