The German Templars were a millennialist German denomination that brought advancements in agriculture and technology to Palestine. The German Colony (Hamoshava Hagermanit) was established at the base of Mount Carmel, in Haifa in 1868 by the German Templers. It was the first of several colonies established by the group in the Holy Land. Others were founded in Sarona near Jaffa, Galilee and Jerusalem. Kaiser Wilhelm the II, the last German Kaiser of Germany, visited the German Colony back in 1898.The object of their visit was to see the "German Colony"; which you can still see the remnants of, at the base of Mount Carmel (below the BaHai Temple Gardens). You can get a wonderful view of both the BaHai Temple Gardens, & the remnants of the German Colony; from what is now called the "Kaiser's Watch," located at the top of Mount Carmel. The Templers erected a six foot high obelisk shaped Kaiser Monument in his honor, at the top of Mount Carmel to commemorate Kaiser Wilhelm's visit; when he and his party were brought to Kaiser's Watch for the spectacular view of the surroundings below, and to the north of Haifa. Around the Kaiser Monument was planted the well-kept garden of Kikar HaKeisar (the Kaiser Plaza). At the site is a Turkish cannon left over from when the Ottoman Empire ruled this part of Israel. Kaiser's Watch is significant to LDS People because it is the place where on October 18, 1927, Apostle James E. Talmage, dedicated the Holy Land. John A. Widstoe did the same on May 21, 1933 setting up a mission home in Haifa. To get there, go to the upper entrance to the Bahai Gardens, from there ask at the gate, or continue just a little further on the same street going east along the border of the gardens, Kaiser's Watch is just across the street from another entrance to the Bahai Gardens; which is usually closed.
