It is considered is a collective community in Israel that was traditionally based on agriculture. The first kibbutz, established in 1909, was Degania. In 2010, there were 270 kibbutzim in Israel. Their factories and farms accounted for 9% of Israel's industrial output. Ginosar, is a kibbutz on the western banks of the Sea of Galilee in Israel. Located north of Tiberias on Highway 90, it falls under the jurisdiction of Emek HaYarden Regional Council. In 2006 it had a population of 472. During the First Century AD, Ginosar was a flourishing town known by Greek and Latin speakers as Gennesaret, with the version "Ginosar" first appearing in the New Testament. The modern name of kibbutz takes its name from this ancient town, though it is not certain it is located on precisely the same site. Present Day Ginosar was founded on the eve of Purim in March 1937 by a group of young Socialist Zionists, on Palestine Jewish Colonization Association (PICA) land that had been leased to the settlement of Migdal. The reason given for "squatting" on this land was that the leased area needed close protection during the "disturbances" (19361939 Arab revolt in Palestine). The original cpmmunity was built as a tower and stockade settlement. Ginosar was originally built as an agricultural community; now its primary source of income is from tourism. One of the reasons for its tourism is the Jesus Boat, or Sea of Galilee Boat. During a severe drought in January 1986, two brothers who were fishermen from Ginosar discovered the remains of a boat on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. Sculptor and kibbutz gardener Yuvi Lufan, along with his brother Moshe discovered the boat. The boat has been carbon dated to 100 BCE to 70 CE. Using innovative techniques, & a complex restoration, the boat frame was rescued, and it is displayed in the Beit Yigal Allon Museum Center at Kibbutz Ginosar. At this superb indoor display, visitors learn that this mainly oak-and-cedar craft was patched repeatedly and lovingly with 2 different kinds of wood, and that these very trees still can be found growing along the walkway to the museum.
