Shiloh was an ancient city mentioned in the Hebrew Bible. Its site is at modern Khirbet Seilun, south of ancient Tirzah and 10 miles (16 km) north of the Israeli settlement of Beth El in the West Bank.

It was the capital of Israel before the first Temple was built in Jerusalem.

Mentioned in the time of the Book of Joshua and of the Judges (Judg. 21:19), Shiloh is situated north of Beth-El, east of the Beth ElShechem highway and south of Lebonah in the hill-country of Ephraim.

Shiloh is mentioned in the Hebrew Bible in Genesis 49:10 as part of the benediction given by Jacob to his son Judah.

Shiloh could be, perhaps the Messiah, or a place, as mentioned later in Judges and also in Jeremiah 41:5.

A resident of Shiloh was the prophet Achiyah mentioned in I Kings 14.

Long before the arrival of the Israelites, Shiloh which was located in the Ephraimite Hill Country, was a walled city with either a religious shrine, or sanctuary; during Middle and Late Bronze Age Canaan.

Archaeological excavations have shown that Shiloh was already settled in about the 19th-18th centuries BC.

While it is uncertain when the Israelites arrived in the land, we do know that they set up there the ancient wilderness tent shrine (the Tent of Meeting: Heb. 'Ohel-Mo'ed') and there Joshua divided the land among the tribes. Subsequently, Shiloh became one of the leading religious shrines in ancient Israel, until David's elevation of Jerusalem.

Shiloh was one of the main centers of Israelite worship during the pre-monarchic period, since the Tent Shrine was there, and because of the Ark of the Covenant being kept there. The people made pilgrimages there for major feasts and sacrifices, and Judges 21 records the place as the site of an annual dance of maidens among the vineyards.

Then, King David, the second (or third, if Ish-bosheth is counted) King of Israel, established Jerusalem as its national capital in 1006 BCE.

David who, following the civil war with Saul, created a strong and unified Israelite monarchy, reigning from c.1000-961 BCE.. Solomon, David's successor, maintained the unified monarchy from, c. 961-922.

Then, Shiloh's importance began to decline.

During the prophetic ministry of Jeremiah (7:12-15; 26:5-9), over three hundred years later, Shiloh had been reduced to ruins. Jeremiah used the example of Shiloh to warn the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem just what Jahweh will do to the "place where I caused my name to dwell", warning of them that their holy city, too, like Shiloh, could fall under divine judgment.
