Height: Up To 4 to 18 inches.
Flowers: Red - Purple to Light Pink - Purple. Pea-like flowers about 1/4 inch long in very elongated clusters. The banner petal has a red - spotted yellow and white banner spot that becomes magenta with age. Produced 20�50 or more on a tall spike.
Flowering Time: March - May.
Leaves: Green, hairy, and palmately compound with 6�10 leaflets, each leaflet 1/2 to 1 3/4 inches long and 1/4 to 1/2 inches broad, on a 1/2 to 3 inch long petiole.
Found: Mojave Desert of California and Arizona. The USDA claims it is native of the USA (AZ, CA, NV).

Elevation: 0 - 3,200 feet.
Habitat: Sandy desert soils, hot, sunny areas, good drainage, roadways, sandy or gravelly areas.
Miscellaneous: Great Xeriscape plant. Easy to see on the Joshua Tree Forest Parkway, a few miles northwest of Wickenburg, Arizona. BTW. it has more Joshua Trees to see than the nationsl park in California.
