When most people are asked about Luxor, they usually do not realize that Luxor is really three different areas of Egypt. This general area consists of the City of Luxor on the East side of the Nile. The town of Karnak just north of Luxor. And Thebes, which the ancient Egyptians called Waset, located on the west side of the Nile, across from Luxor.

The Temple Of Luxor complex was linked to Karnak by the long straight dromos completed during the reign of Nectanebo I. The temple used to be called, Ipet Resyt.

Oddly, the Mosque of Abu El-Hagag dedicated to Sheikh Yussef Abu el-Hagag, who is said to have decended from the Muslum Prophet, Muhammad during the 12th century is also located in the temple complex.

The road from Luxor to Karnak follows the main street Shari' el-Markaz which is lined with bazaars and resturants. Nearby is the Mosque of El-Mekashkesh, the 10th century Muslum saint who restored Islam to Egypt.

Midway between Luxor and Karnak is the Luxor Museum which contains many beautiful discoveries of the region.

Our tour reached Luxor in the daylight and we drove around the complex.

The walking tour took place in the evening and we were able to take some interesting pictures of Luxor at night. Since George DeLange has been an avid astronomer for most of his life, the alignments of the stars and planets on this evening were very interesting to observe.

The evening was on December 30, 2000 and the night sky was beautiful with the moon almost at first quarter with Jupiter and Saturn together with the star Aldebaren in the East at dusk.

Off Low in the SouthEast was the star Sirius which was very important to Egyptian astronomy since its' rising with the sun in the morning of June 17th was the signal that summer had begun and that the annual flooding of the Nile would begin.

Sirius today is still known as the "Dog Star." Sirius is the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major (The Great or Big Dog). In fact, Sirius is one of the brightest stars in our night sky! The term "Dog Days Of Summer" has its roots in this Egyptian tradition.

The Cairo International Airport (IATA: CAI, ICAO: HECA) is the busiest airport in Egypt and is located to the north-east of the city around 15 km from the business area of the city.

Cairo International is the second busiest airport in Africa with over 65 airlines using the Cairo airport (including charter airlines) and 9 cargo airlines. With the assimilation of EgyptAir into Star Alliance in July 2008 the airport has the potential to be a major hub with its positioning between Africa, the Middle East and Europe. In 2008, the airport served 14,360,175 passengers and it is one of the top 100 airports in the world.

The airport handles both domestic and international flights, and is open 24 hours a day.

We suggest flying into Cairo and staying in one of their many fine hotels when touring Cairo and the ruins in the surrounding areas.

We have links on this page that will connect you with flights into Cairo and several of the best hotels in Cairo.

A second option is to fly directly to Aswan.

The Aswan International Airport (IATA: ASW, ICAO: HESN), also known as Daraw Airport, is the airport located in Aswan, Egypt. You can arrange flights directly to Aswan, If you wish.

A third option is to fly directly to Luxor.

Luxor International Airport (IATA: LXR, ICAO: HELX) is the main airport serving the city of Luxor, Egypt. It is located about four miles (6km) east of the city.

Many charter airlines use the airport, as it is a popular tourist destination for those visiting the River Nile and the Valley of the Kings.

After getting a flight and a hotel we suggest asking your hotel concierge to arrange either a car or a tour of Luxor, Aswan, or the Cairo area. If you call their Concierge Services ahead of your arrival, all of this can be pre-arranged for you.

We do this when traveling in Egypt. It is safe and it works!!! We have never experienced a problem, doing it this way!

Therefore, we have placed links to Priceline.com on this page so you can arrange your flights into and out of Luxor, Aswan, or the Cairo area; as well as your hotel, when visiting this area.
