MENA HOUSE OBEROI, Where the Pharaohs stayed when they were building their Pyramids!

CAIRO; as ancient as time itself. Cairo, Is The Mother of Egypt and Keeper Of The Tombs.

Under the shadow of the Great Pyramid itself, lies a unique hotel - the Mena House Oberoi.

One of the joys of staying at the Mena House Oberoi is that many of Egypt's magnificent treasures are but a stone's throw away. The Sphinx and Great Pyramid is literally on the other side and within a five minute walk of the golf course.

In its 40 acres of jasmine scented gardens with the Great Pyramid towering above, the Mena House has seen enchanting distinguished guests ever since it opened in 1869. There's even an old story the staff love to tell about a guest who asked where the Pharaohs stayed when they were building their Pyramids. "At the Mena House of course, where else?" was the happy reply.

Noteworthy people who have stayed at the Mena House are: Winston Churchill, President Roosevelt, Chiang Kai Chek, General Montgomery, Robert Taylor, Omar Shariff, Barbara Hutton, Aga Khan, Richard Nixon, and of course, George and Audrey DeLange.

It seems as if the chefs and architects have all worked together to produce some extraordinary dining experiences. The Al Rubayat is a perfect example. The magnificently proportioned room pierced by arabesque arches and mashrabia screens, and lit by beautiful antique Islamic lamps, offers superb continental cuisine and an international selection of fine wines. The Moghul Room is an equally grand room specializing in beautifully prepared Indian cuisine, and the Khan El Khalili, named after the famous Cairo market, offers Egyptian and continental specialities 24 hours a day. For breakfast, snacks and light refreshments, however, the ideal spot is the bright and cheerful Greenery. Audrey and George spent most of their leasure time at the Greenery!

The Mena House Oberoi is an entertaining hotel and when the evening draws in there are a host of things to do. Cocktails in the Sultan Bar, for example, with its magnificent panoramic view of the pyramids, an aperitif in the Mameluke Bar, or a night out in the Abu Nawas night club or the exciting outdoor Oasis Club in the summer. The jet set too are catered for with the exciting Saddle Discotheque, one of the liveliest in town. A night of gaming at the casino can also be a pleasurable pastime. But the Mena House is also a romantic hotel and there is nothing nicer than strolling through the lovely gardens in the moonlight, surrounded by the scents of the flowers, with the Great Pyramid silhouetted in the distance.

For those who like to be active the Mena House Oberoi has plenty to offer. The hotel's magnificent outdoor pool, the largest in Cairo, complete with its own poolside coffee shop draws the energetic as well as those who prefer just to relax and soak up the perpetual Mena House sunshine. The gardens are perfect for jogging, especially in the early morning, and the hotel has outdoor tennis courts which are available at any time. For golfing enthusiasts, there's also a magnificent 18-hole golf course, right on the doorstep. Riding is also extremely popular and the hotel has a stable of horses and camels complete with experienced instructors.

The Cairo International Airport (IATA: CAI, ICAO: HECA) is the busiest airport in Egypt and is located to the north-east of the city around 15 km from the business area of the city.

Cairo International is the second busiest airport in Africa with over 65 airlines using the Cairo airport (including charter airlines) and 9 cargo airlines. With the assimilation of EgyptAir into Star Alliance in July 2008 the airport has the potential to be a major hub with its positioning between Africa, the Middle East and Europe. In 2008, the airport served 14,360,175 passengers and it is one of the top 100 airports in the world.

The airport handles both domestic and international flights, and is open 24 hours a day.

We suggest flying into Cairo and staying in one of their many fine hotels when touring Cairo and the ruins in the surrounding areas.

We have links on this page that will connect you with flights into Cairo and several of the best hotels in Cairo.

A second option is to fly directly to Aswan.

The Aswan International Airport (IATA: ASW, ICAO: HESN), also known as Daraw Airport, is the airport located in Aswan, Egypt. You can arrange flights directly to Aswan, If you wish.

A third option is to fly directly to Luxor.

Luxor International Airport (IATA: LXR, ICAO: HELX) is the main airport serving the city of Luxor, Egypt. It is located about four miles (6km) east of the city.

Many charter airlines use the airport, as it is a popular tourist destination for those visiting the River Nile and the Valley of the Kings.

After getting a flight and a hotel we suggest asking your hotel concierge to arrange either a car or a tour of Luxor, Aswan, or the Cairo area. If you call their Concierge Services ahead of your arrival, all of this can be pre-arranged for you.

We do this when traveling in Egypt. It is safe and it works!!! We have never experienced a problem, doing it this way!

Therefore, we have placed links to Priceline.com on this page so you can arrange your flights into and out of Luxor, Aswan, or the Cairo area; as well as your hotel, when visiting this area.
