Screwbean Mesquite Tree.

The honey mesquite or screw ( Prosopis pubescens ) is a small tree or shrub native to the arid regions of Mexico ( Baja California , Chihuahua , Coahuila and Sonora ) and the southwestern United States, ( from Texas to California ). A single or multi - stemmed deciduous small tree or shrub reaching up to 20 to 40 feet tall and about the same or slightly wider width; vase shaped, open and spreading.

Height: About 20 to 30 feet. Same spread.
Flowers: Pale green - yellow, 2 to 3 inches long, appearing in late spring and early summer. Inflorescences, axillary spikes.
Blooming Time: April to June.
Seed Pod: A light brown or tan tightly coiled legume, 1 to 2 inches long, ripening in the middle to late summer.
Leaves: The leaves are Alternate, bipinnately compound, 1 to 2 inches long, usually with only two major leaflets (may occasionally have 2 to 3 pairs), each leaflet has 6 to 9 pairs of narrow minor leafletsabout 1/2 to 1 inch long. They have entire margins with a fuzzy surface, green, to gray-green above, slightly paler below.
Stems/Trunks: An attractive gray shaggy - rough trunk; the twigs are jointy, branches gnarled and twisted. Some spines about 3/4 inch long on the stems.
Found: The USDA claims it is native to the USA (AZ, CA, NM, NV, TX, UT). It is also native to the arid regions & riparian areas of the Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts of Mexico, in Baja California, Chihuahua, Coahuila, and Sonora.
