Pink Muhly Grass. Muhlenbergia capillaris, Grass Family ( Poaceae ), Pink Muhly Grass. Pink Muhly Grass can grow 3 feet in height and spread over 6 feet wide. In the fall, its deep pink flowers covering the plant is especially beautiful when backlit by the sun. Muhlenbergia capillaris is a showy clump forming grass. The stems and leaves are wirelike and unbranched, originating from a dense basal clump. The purple - red or pink inflorescence is a diffuse, silky panicle, about 18 inches long and 10 inches wide. It stands out above the wiry leaves. It appears in the late summer, and persists for 6 - 8 weeks. The ripe seeds that follow the bloom give the plumes a tan color. It tolerates alkaline soil; extremely drought tolerant. Moderate to little water, cannot tolerate poorly-drained soils.

Found: The USDA claims it is native to the USA (AL, AR, CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, MO, MS, NC, NJ, NY, OH, OK, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA, WV), USA+ (PR) Also found in northern Mexico in the state of Chihuahua.
Hardiness: NOTE: Some report that it is only hardy to 18 �F.
