Penstemon parryi, Snapdragon or Figwort Family: ( Scrophulariaceae ), Parry's Penstemon. Also called: Parry's Beardtongue.

A low evergreen shrub, or herbaceous perennial.


Quick Notes:

Height: About 1 - 4 feet in height.

Flowers: The flower is funnel-shaped, with short round lobes. The corolla is about 3/4 inch long, glandular and hairy on the outside. It has a broad upper corolla with a 2 - lobed lip, bent upward. The lower corolla lip is 3 - lobed and bent downward. There are 5 stamens, the fifth is sterile but bearded at the tip.

Stalk: Several erect, sparsely leaved stems with pinkish-lavender, bilaterally symmetrical flowers in a long, open, interrupted cluster.

Flowering Time: February - May.

Fruit: Green - gray, spineless fruit, 1 to 1-1/2 inches long, 3/4 to 1 inches in diameter dry when ripe. Seeds 3/10 inches in diameter, rounded, smooth, and cream colored.

Seeds: Seedpods 1 - 1 1/2" long, 3/8 - 1/2" in diameter; a cylindrical pod; short-pointed at ends, reddish; maturing in summer, remaining attached, often opening late; many elliptical flattened shiny brown; seeds.

Leaves: Green to blue - green, fleshy, about 2 - 5 inches long, lanceolate, without stalks, smooth, those at the midstem are broadest at the base.

Found: Native to Southern & Central Arizona, & New Mexico, & Sonora, Mexico.

Habitat: Chalky/alkaline, Dry, Sandy, Well-drained/light soils. An ideal xeriscape landscape plant in Arizona.
