Arizona Poppy.
We wish to thank Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia for some of the information on this page. We share images and information with Wikipedia. Arizona Poppy blooms in the late summer to fall and has five flower petals. It especially blooms in the summer after the summer rains. It is often confused with Mexican Gold Poppy (Eschscholtzia mexicana), which blooms in the spring and has four petals. Arizona Poppy flowers are over an inch across with 5 petals. In the early morning they open and have a bright orange color with darker striations, then fade to a pale orange with the afternoon heat. This summer annual grows from nearly prostrate to about 3 feet across with sparse divided foliage. When young it could be confused with goat heads folaige. Arizona Poppy flowers have no fragrance, but they are visited by at least 46 different species of insects, including bees, wasps, butterflies, and flies. Note: This plant is not a member of the poppy family of plants. It is mistakenly called a poppy!
