These granite quarries were used to remove many of the stones that were used for the monuments near Aswan. In the Google Map above, you can see the outline of the "Unfinished Obelisk." If this obelisk had been completed (it cracked before it could be finished) it would have been the largest obelisk in Egypt. The quarriers dug oblong holes along the lines to be cut. They drove in wooden wedges into the cuts. They then soaked the wood with water. When the wood expanded; the granite would break so they could then remove the stone. The departure point to the quarries is along the East Bank of the town of Aswan and its' bazaar along the Corniche.

The Aswan International Airport (IATA: ASW, ICAO: HESN), also known as Daraw Airport, is the airport located in Aswan, Egypt. You can arrange flights directly to Aswan, If you wish. After getting a flight and a hotel we suggest asking your hotel concierge to arrange either a car or a tour of Aswan or the Cairo area. If you call their Concierge Services ahead of your arrival, all of this can be pre-arranged for you. We do this all the time, when traveling in Egypt. It is safe and it works!!! We have never experienced a problem, doing it this way!
