Wild Red Raspberry is a perennial plant which bears biennial stems or "canes" from its perennial root system. During its first year, a new stem grows vigorously to its full height of about 59 inches to about 100 inches. It is unbranched, and it bears large pinnate leaves with five or seven leaflets; normally during the first year it does not produce any flowers. During its second year, the stem does not grow any taller, but produces several side shoots, which bear smaller leaves with three or five leaflets. Its flowers are produced in the late spring on short racemes; then on the tips of these side shoots, each flower which is about 1 cm diameter with five white petals appears. Red Raspberries fruit in made up of an aggregate of numerous drupelets around a central core. It is red, edible, sweet but tart-flavoured, and produced in the late summer or early autumn. Wild Red Raspberry typically grows in forests, forming open stands under a tree canopy, and denser stands in clearings.
