Sedona Arizona is located about 120 miles north of Phoenix in Arizona's central mountains. It is about 30 miles south of Flagstaff. Sedona is set amongst towering sandstone cliffs that glow with an energized red hue. Just north of Sedona is Oak Creek Canyon with its own natural beauty, swimming holes, rock slides, and camping in its cool forest. Of course, there are many wonderful resorts in the area. Sedona is named after Sedona Miller Schnebly (18771950), the wife of the city's first postmaster, who was celebrated for her hospitality and industriousness. The famous red rocks of Sedona are formed by a layer of rock known as the Schnebly Hill Formation. The Schnebly Hill Formation is a thick layer of red to orange-colored sandstone found only in the Sedona vicinity. The sandstone, a member of the Supai Group, was deposited during the Permian Period. The stunning natural beauty of Sedona combined with its relaxed atmosphere has drawn many visitors to the area. In Sedona you can choose to experience the Sedona Vortexes or participate in a Cosmic Wheel of Destiny Ceremony. In both cases you can be transported into a different dimension for a real spiritual experience. There are even some nice Ancient Sinagua Ruins nearby Sedona. They are Honanki & Palatki. You also do not want to miss the ancient Sinagua petroglyphs at the V-Bar-V Heritage Site, located about a half hour away from downtown Sedona. It's paved road almost all the way. For an unforgettable Sedona experience, you must include spending time at the internationally renowned Tlaquepaque (pronounced Tla-keh-pah-keh), Sedona Arizona's Arts & Crafts Village. It is nestled beneath the shade of the sycamores on the banks of beautiful Oak Creek in Sedona. It is said that Tlaquepaque is the most distinctive shopping experience to be found in the Southwest. It is authentically fashioned after a traditional Mexican village, Tlaquepaque, meaning the "best of everything," has been a Sedona landmark since the 1970's Adjacent to Tlaquepaque is the Los Abrigados (The Windbreaks) Resort, which is recognized as one of the finest ownerships resorts in the country. Los Abrigados takes full advantage of the fantastic red rock views of Sedona. Los Abrigados Resort & Spa is nestled against the banks of the famous Oak Creek in Sedona, Arizona. The resort rests on twenty-two acres of winding walkways, cascading fountains and shady nooks, while evoking a feeling of total privacy. During the Christmas Holidays, usually starting at about Thanksgiving, Los Abrigados Resort provides its Red Rock Fantasy; which is a festival of more than a million lights providing a holiday tradition in the shadows of the beautiful Sedona Red Rocks. Proceeds from the festival are given to local charities. This is an event, not to be missed! Another "must-do" adventure in Sedona is to take a Pink Jeep Tour. Since 1960, Pink Jeep Tours has been providing the most talked about off-road adventures in Sedona. We have several photos below of a fantastic Pink Jeep Tour we took several years ago. Most tours of Sedona can be arranged through the Expedia Links. Eve DeLange was a realtor in Sedona for several years who specialized in houses which sold for over a million dollars each. She knows just about every square inch of the area and would welcome your questions. Please feel free to contact her with any questions about the area. If you are planning to visit the Sedona and the Red Rock area and you are coming from outside of Arizona, you could fly into Phoenix and then rent a car. Sedona is a little over a 2 hour drive from Phoenix off of the scenic I-17 route between Phoenix and Flagstaff. There are hotels and motels all along the way in nearby towns. We have some links to Priceline.com on this page since they can arrange all of your air flights, hotels and car. You may need some outdoor clothing and equipment, if you plan to visit the Prescott or Sedona area. We have some links to Altrec on this page since they are a good online source for outdoor gear. We of course, appreciate your use of the advertising on our pages, since it helps us to keep this page active.
