The Sican Museum is located in Ferreñafe, about 20 km or 25 minutes from the city of Chiclayo. It is along the road to the Bosque de Pómac Historical Sanctuary. It shows the different aspects of daily life of the Sican culture; including pottery making and metal crafts. In addition, the Sican Museum has an interesting display of the tombs of the Sican nobility. The Sican Culture The name Sicán, refers to the culture that flourished in the Lambayeque region in about 750 AD. This culture traces its roots in the local Mochica culture and to other contemporary cultures such as the Cajamarca, Wari, and Pachacamac. The Sicán (which means "Temple of the Moon"), who were the first to discover bronze in northern Peru, buried their dead in unique vertical rooms and surrounded them with large collections of valuable metals. Those graves provided looters throughout Peru with a wealth of sought-after gold objects. Sicán masks with ojos alados, or "winged eyes," are very prized among institutions and collectors, and some excellent examples are on view here. The museum is located in Ferreñafe, 20km (12 miles) north of Chiclayo, along the road that leads to Batán Grande. Sican is NOT the same as Sipán, which is another important archaeological site of the Mochica or Moche culture. Tourists often confuse the two. We were at the Sicán Museum on April 26, 2006 at about 9:41 AM.

It is advisable to book reservations ahead of time, as hotels, especially in high season, are quickly booked up. The Capitán FAP José A. Quiñones Gonzales International Airport (IATA: CIX, ICAO: SPHI) is the airport serving Chiclayo, Peru and the surrounding metropolitan area. It is run by CORPAC S.A. (Corporación Peruana de Aeropuertos y Aviación Comercial S.A.), a government-run organization that oversees the management of Peruvian airports. It is the main airport of the Lambayeque Region, one of the most populous of the country. To see the the Sicán Museum and the other museums & ruins in the Chiclayo and Lambayeque Peru area we suggest flying into Chiclayo, Peru and arranging to stay at one of the fine hotels in the Chiclayo or Lambayeque area. There is another choice and that is to fly in to Trujillo. Trujillo is a moderately large city in Northwestern Peru, very close to the Pacific Coast. Trujillo is known for its seafood and the beaches of its famous surf and beach resort Huanchaco. The Capitán FAP Carlos Martínez de Pinillos International Airport (IATA: TRU, ICAO: SPRU); known as Aeropuerto Internacional Capitán FAP Carlos Martínez de Pinillos in Spanish, is the airport serving Peru's third most important city, Trujillo. It is the main air hub in northern Peru.
