This page contains information about Peru Tourist Trains. No photos on this page are ours. We can not give you permission to use these photos. If you wish to use them, we suggest contacting PERUrail; which is probably the only train company in Peru. It took us quite a while to accumulate this information; so we are placing it here as a service to those who need to make train arrangements in Peru. The tourist is generally interested in train service from cities that lead to Aguas Calientes, which is also called Machu Picchu. Especially service to and from the city of Cusco. From the San Pedro Cusco Station (next to the Hunchac market) there are three train services offered daily to the Machu Picchu train station. This is an incredible scenic tour. But you must be very careful with the things that you carry with you. Train services start at 6:00 AM in the morning. After you leave the train station in Cusco you will travel for about a half hour, the train then passes by the Picchu Mountain through a zigzag journey until it reaches the highest point called "El Arco" in the northeastern part of the city. Going onward, you go through Poroy, Cachimatyo, and Izcuchaca toward Pampa de Anta, a cattle ranching area. Running by the narrow ravine of Pomatales, you will travel toward the Sacred Valley of the Incas to the Pachar station. You will then cross the Urubamba River toward its right bank to the Ollantaytambo train station and then to Puente Ruinas, your final destination. There are three types of services: the budget tourism train or Backpacker Train. The next level of luxury, the railcar or Vistadome, and the top of the line luxury service, the Hiram Bingham Train. The Backpacker service is comfortable with wide space for the passengers' backpacks. The Vistadome is considered the fastest and most comfortable way of visiting Machu Picchu. During the trip, you can have snacks as well as hot and cold drinks. The coaches are supplied with panoramic windows that allow you to enjoy spectacular sights and to take beautiful pictures. The Hiram Bingham Train has two coaches and 42 seats for passengers and a bar car. It additionally has a kitchen car to prepare very delicious luxury food for your journey. The coaches are big and comfortable with wide seats and extra wide tables. These coaches are among the widest and most comfortable in the world. Service on the Hiram Bingham Train includes: one Train Ticket, one Brunch Ticket, one Afternoon Tea, one Cocktail and Gourmet Dinner, Water, Coffee, Tea, and one Tour including the entrance to Machu Picchu, and one round trip bus ticket to the ruins. Those who have traveled by land to the Sacred Valley and who do not want to lose time going back to Cusco, can also take a train to Machu Picchu from the Ollantaytambo station. If you have a very short time to visit Peru, the best way of traveling is by plane. The International Airport Jorge Chvez in Lima is the main hub for the local connections of flights. It is about 1,165 Km (724 miles) from Lima to Cusco. You would need about twenty hours to make the trip by land but it takes about one hour to make the trip by plane. There are other train tours that we know of and they can be obtained from the same company that owns the Hiram Bingham Train. They are PERUrail, owned by Orient - Express Hotel, Trains, and Cruises, and we are providing a link to their home page if you wish to see what they have to offer. This page is for information purposes only and while we have made every effort to be accurate, it is the travelers responsibility to make the appropriate choice as to which trains to use in Peru. Train schedules change according to the time of the year so you should verify all schedules or have a tourist service schedule your purchase for you. We receive nothing for our train recommendations or information. We simply are providing this information for your convenience. We can assume no responsibility for your selection of your mode of travel in Peru. It is advisable to buy tickets ahead of time, as these trains, especially in high season, are quickly booked up. We would recommend using a travel agency to do this for you. That way, there should be no confusion or difficulty. If you buy the tickets through a travel agency, you should be picked up from your hotel to go to the station, and after the visit you should be taken back to your hotel at dusk time. We are providing a link at the bottom of this page to photos of our actual travel by Perurail. Those photos are ours and we can give permission to use the photos if you desire to do so.
