Castilleja lanata, Figwort Family: ( Scrophulariaceae ), Woolly Paintbrush. Also called: Woolly Paintbrush, Sierra Woolly Indian Paintbrush, Hierba de Conejo, Painted Cup.

A short lived perennial plant, fast growing to 2 - 3 feet tall. Generally about 18 inches tall. A partial root parasite.

There is a yellow white flowered variety of this species commonly called White-Felted Paintbrush.

There are over 12 species of this plant in Arizona and they are very difficult to identify.

The leaves of this plant were known in Mexico by the Zapotec's as Hierba de Conejo and were used in the cooking of beans and rice. Used fresh or dry.

Height: Perennial growing to about 2 - 3 feet tall.

Flowers: The flowers are red to red - orange with lobed, hairy, in terminal clusters, with narrow bracts.

Flowering Time: April - October.

Leaves: The leaves are red - green, covered with white hair, about 2 inches long. The lower leaves are linear while the upper leaves are tri-lobed.

Found: Native of USA (AZ, CO, NM, TX). Also Mexico (Mesoamerica).

Habitat: Dry hills, woodlands, mesas, plains, high prairies, on gravelly or rocky soil. Also used as a xeriscape landscape plant!

Miscellaneous: This plant is attractive to bees, butterflies and/or birds. It is drought-tolerant; suitable for xeriscaping. Self-sows freely; deadhead if you do not want volunteer seedlings next season. Flowering Photos Taken March 10, 2005. Bartlett Lake Area of Arizona.
