WHO WE ARE:

"The Garden Gang" is a friendly group of people from Yarnell, Peeple's Valley, & Congress, Arizona; who want to garden and have fun while we're at it.

We currently meet every Sunday at 5:00 PM at the Community Center Building in Yarnell, Arizona.

We currently work in the Garden in the mornings, but our "work hours" constantly are changing with the changes in the weather and the demands of our plants.

Members pay a $10 annual membership fee and participate in whatever way they may choose to help the Garden flourish.

To get more information or to confirm meetings or working schedules, please e-mail Eve DeLange at the link near the top of this page, just under the "Couch Potato".

OUR VISION:

A garden that is both beautiful and bountiful, one which provides sustenance, inspires opportunities for offshoots, and creates a feeling of belonging.

Our gardening activities will grow an atmosphere that is welcoming, purposeful, and fun.

OUR MISSION:

To create a self-sustaining, welcoming garden which nourishes members of the community, re-connects us with nature, and provides opportunities to share food, information, technology, skills, and resources.

We also want to encourage and assist members of our community in their gardens at home.

The Yarnell Community Garden Project was launched in 2009, it has leased and fenced in a 1/3 acre plot just west of the Yarnell Public Library.

It's gardening activities include planting, watering, sign-making, weeding, promoting, harvesting, selling at the Farmer's Market, sampling, researching, shopping, eating, .... and there are countless other ways to participate!

These photos were taken in 2011, when the Yarnell Community Garden Project or YCGP, planted mostly Heirloom Seeds.

Heirloom plants have provided our members and community a wider variety of flavors, colors, texture, and sizes than those plants that are commercially available in most of the vegetable markets today.

A Heirloom Plant is a cultivated variety of a plant that was commonly grown during earlier periods of our Human History.

In today's modern agriculture in our industrialized world, most food crops are now grown in large, monocultural plots, with few varieties. This is done to maximize consistancy and to lower operating costs.

The plants selected for this use are chosen for their productivity, ability to withstand mechanical picking, cross-country shipping, and their tolerance to drought, frost, and or pesticides.

They do not always have the best flavor!

Heirloom Gardening is a reaction against this trend, and it is now becoming popular among many home gardeners.

Please feel free to join with us in this new effort of our gardening project!
