Zexmenia hispida, Aster or Sunflower Family ( Asteraceae ),also known as the Composite Family: ( Compositae ), Orange Zexmenia: Also Called: Rough Zexmenia, Devil's River, Orange Daisy, Hairy Wedelia, Wedelia hispida, Wedelia texana, Wedelia acapulcensis var. hispida.

Zexmenia, or Zexmenia hispida, is a perennial with yellow flowers and a long booming period (May to October). It is very drought tolerant when established. Grow in full sun in a well drained location.

This plant is very attractive to bees, butterflies and/or birds. The leaves are eaten by deer.

Height: Up To 3 feet tall. Up to 3 feet wide.

Flowers: Yellowish-orange flower head which consists of several disk flowers and seven to fifteen ray flowers.

Blooming Time: May to October.

Leaves: The stems and leaves are covered with stiff hairs. The leaves measure two to three inches in length with coarsely-toothed margins.

Found: The USDA claims it is native to the USA (TX). It is found in Texas on the Edward's Plateau, & the South Texas Plains.

Elevation: Native elevation about 100 to 3,000 feet in Texas. Will grow from 0 to 5,600 feet in Arizona.

Hardiness: We have seen it growing in Zone 8a in Arizona.

6.1 to 6.5 (mildly acidic)
6.6 to 7.5 (neutral)

Habitat: Yellowish clay, to clay loam surface soil; which quickly turns into rocky clay endemic to the Edwards Plateau in Texas. Sandy desert soils, hot, sunny areas, good drainage, dry gravelly, calcareous, and rocky soils.
