Ashurst Lake: Elevation about 7,123 feet. Coconino Reservoir is also located a half mile south of Ashurst Lake. Ashurst Lake is a small lake of about 230 acres and an average depth of 12 feet. A Google Earth Map search marks the Ashurst Lake Boat Launch at about 35o 01' 15.14" N 111o 24' 24.98" W. Ashurst Lake is an excellent place to fish. It is stocked with trout, bass and channel catfish and boasts enough wind to attract a fairly large following of wind surfers. How to get there: From Flagstaff, AZ, off of Interstate 17, take the Exit 339 (Lake Mary Road./Morman Road.). Turn south onto the Lake Mary Road. and go 17.1 miles to the Ashurst Lake sign. Then turn left at the sign and go 3.9 miles on a washboard, gravel road to the stop sign. Then turn right into the campground. The campground is located adjacent to Ashurst Lake with most of the sites overlooking the lake. It is composed of some Ponderosa pines, but mostly Junipers. There are lots of birds and waterfowl. The lake is excellent for wind surfing and Sunfish sailing. Ashurst Lake has two campgrounds; the Ashurst Lake and Forked Pine Campgrounds. Ashurst Lake Campground offers 25 single unit sites Forked Pine Campground 33 offers sites. There are tables, fire rings, and cooking grills, Drinking water, Toilets (vault and compost type), Forked Pine Toilets are Barrier Free, Boat ramp on the lake's west side. Tents and small motor homes are permitted at both campgrounds. Ashurst permits trailers under 22'. No utility hookups. Pets must always be restrained or on a leash. No horses allowed in the campground. Motorbikes may only be used for entering or leaving campsite. The higher numbered camping sites are less developed and have more of a disbursed camping feel. Firewood is available for a fee. The campgrounds are usually open May 2 through October 20. Power boats are limited to 8 hp. The boat ramp is primitive and rocky at its end. How to get there: From Flagstaff, AZ, off of Interstate 17, take the Exit 339 (Lake Mary Road./Morman Road.). Turn south onto the Lake Mary Road. and go 17.1 miles to the Ashurst Lake sign. Then turn left at the sign and go 3.9 miles on a washboard, gravel road to the stop sign. When you reach the T in the road at Ashurst Lake, turn right, and continue half mile until you reach the road closure sign. Park here and walk in, about 300 yards (270 m).
