Plateau Country and the Mormon Lake Ranger District of the Coconino National Forest is located just South of Flagstaff, where a group of both large and small lakes fill the natural depressions in the area's volcanic caprock. It takes about 2 - 3 hours to drive the popular 80 mile Plateau Lakes Scenic Drive. If you plan to stop for a while, it takes longer. The Plateau Lakes Scenic Drive takes you down a little traveled country road through meadows and forests where you'll see vestiges of the area's ranching heritage and perhaps catch a glimpse of some of its plentiful wildlife; such as deer or elk. The return trip is on Interstate 17 which gives you an excellent long distance view of the beautiful San Francisco Peaks. The areas attractions include fishing, boating, picnicking, camping (developed and primitive), wildlife watching, biking, and photography. Some wildlife enthusiasts come to take advantage of the annual waterfowl migrations, and to observe the rare bald eagles that spend the winter fishing the open water of the beautiful surrounding lakes. Nearby Mormon Lake has a village along its western shore. In the village you'll find a lodge and restaurant, along with a number of rentable cabins. You can also rent a riding horse, a mountain bike, or even cross country skis, and snowmobiles here in the winter. From Phoenix take FR 213 east to Lake Mary Road (Forest Highway 3). Then go north for about 33 miles into Flagstaff. From Flagstaff take the Lake Mary Road (Forest Highway 3) south out of Flagstaff for about 33 miles to Forest Road 213. Then turn west 15 miles on FR 213 to I-17 and return 32 miles to Flagstaff.

You also could fly into the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and drive the 144 miles to Flagstaff. Take the I-17 north to Flagstaff. I-17 will end and turn into Milton Road, leading you into Flagstaff. A trip of 144 miles (232 km) - 2 hours. There is also a Sky Harbor - Flagstaff shuttle. There are many hotels and motels in both areas and if you need a place to stay; Priceline.com can arrange that for you.
