Here is our chart of perennial, biennial, and tender perennial bee friendly garden flowers, and wildflowers that grow or will grow in Arizona.

Some are native plants, some are not.

  • Biennial - Wildflower or Flower lives for 2 years.
  • Perennial - Wildflower or Flower lives for 3 or more years.
  • Tender Perennial - A perennial wildflower that grows as an annual in cold climates.

Please Note: This Is Not A Complete List. It is still a work in progress.

Note: Some plants are considered Perennials & Biennials; and yet they also can be considered as Annuals.

Note: Plants can have many common names and sometimes several scientific names; so when using our website, or almost any other, their names can also be confusing. You are usually best off to use scientific names.

We try to use the most popular common names, & scientific names on our web page.

Generally speaking, native plants are a better choice for native wildlife than "exotic plants" from all over the world.

We live in a part of Arizona with many oak trees & while they are probably the best all-round tree for wildlife; they are of little use to bees. However we have noticed bees gathering their honey dew! They do produce honey from it about every 8 years!

And remember; what we call "weeds," may be considered "wonderful plants" by someone else!,

And generally speaking; "wildflowers," as most people prefer to call them, are genarally "good," & usually native plants. Many of the plants on this page are not native to Arizona. But, they will grow in Arizona.

Note: While plants can be considered as good sources for pollen or nectar; many may not produce enough nectar to sustain your bees throughout the year or even to depend upon for a crop of honey. But, if your bees are in an area with a lot of different nectar producing plants; all blooming at the same time, you may be able to receive a good crop of honey.

Another thought is that if you are in an area with plants blooming throughout the year, you may also be able to receive a good crop of honey.

Our information comes from our own personal experience, conversations with other beekeepers, Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension, & the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The blooming times are approximate, many factors, such as, weather, elevation, & soil conditions, affect blooming time.

While our information is copyrighted, & it took a long time to come up with, it may be freely used. Crediting us for its use, would be appreciated.

If you have suggestions of other bee friendly plants in Arizona, or how we could improve our page, we would welcome them. Contact George At [email protected]

Enjoy!
