Chacchoben, Quintana Roo: Chacchoben in Mayan means "the Place of Red Corn", in Spanish you would say "Lugar de Maiz Colorado".
The Chacchoben archeological site is located about 3 km north-west of Lazaro Cardenas (directly on Hwy 293 to Merida, on the west side of the road, not in the village of Chacchoben for which the site is named. The Chacchoben archeological site GPS coordinates at the site entrance are at about: 19°2.978' N, 88°10.470' W. The back side of Temple One can be seen on the west side of Hwy 293 before entering the site if you are traveling from the South. See map of Chacchoben below. When you arrive at the site entrance, Edificio 24 at the West Side of Plaza B is the first structure that you see. Even more impressive temples lay behind Edificio 24 in the Gran Basamento; the tallest one being Temple 1. As you walk through the ruins you will be surrounded by towering mahogany trees, enormous cohune palms, strangler figs and the hanging tentacles of banyan trees. We had this beautiful site pretty much to ourselves on the day of our visit and as we were leaving the only visitors we met were a retired couple who had driven to Chacchoben from Utah. They had driven down to purchase a second home at Cancun and were touring the area. We visited Chacchoben on February 6, 2004 at about 12:00 Noon.

The Chetumal International Airport (IATA: CTM, ICAO: MMCM) is an international airport located in Chetumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico. It handles national and international air traffic for the city of Chetumal. It's operated by Aeropuertos y Servicios Auxiliares, a federal government-owned corporation. There are several good hotels or motels in the Chetumal area, and if you need a place to stay; Priceline.com can arrange that for you. In fact, we think they are the best way to do it! We also have links on this page, that will connect you directly with several of the best hotels in in the Chetumal area. Hotels that we have personally used! We suggest getting a hotel, and then letting them arrange for either a car, or a tour of the Chetumal Region. If you call their Concierge Services, ahead of your arrival, all of this can be pre-arranged for you. We have used this method, many times, when traveling in Mexico. We have found it to be safe and it works!!! We have never experienced a problem, doing it this way! We have personally, booked flights, hotels, and vacations, through Priceline.com and we can highly recommend them. Their website is very easy to use! We have some links to Priceline.com on this page, since they can arrange all of your air flights, hotels and car. We of course, appreciate your use of the advertising on our pages, since it helps us to keep our pages active. We wish to mention the "Costa Maya", a newely developed small tourist region in the municipality of Othón P. Blanco, in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. This municipality is south of Cancún on the border with Belize. The area is generally undeveloped but has been growing rapidly after the construction of a large pier to accommodate cruise ships that are coming to the area. The Costa Maya includes two small villages - Mahahual and Xcalak and extends physically from Xcalak in the south to the southern border of the Sian Ka'an in the north, a distance of approximately 100 km. Costa Maya's port also has a new and modern tourist shopping mall. The center has a central plaza with saltwater pools and "swim-up" style bars. There are several jewelery stores and many small shops selling ubiquitous souvenir items. It is generally open only to cruise ship passengers. Costa Maya is the closest port to many of the lesser known Mayan ruins in the Yucatan including Chacchoben and Kohunlich. Several of the cruise lines are offering tours into these ruins. These sites are less excavated than the better known pyramids near Cancún.
