We suggest flying into one of the large cities in Mexico and arranging to stay in a local hotel in Mexico. Then, arrange for either a tour, a car, or a local driver, to visit the many interesting places in Mexico.

Another way to safely tour Mexico would be to book a hotel, and then to let them arrange for either a car, or a tour of Mexico. If you call their Concierge Services, ahead of your arrival, all of this can be pre-arranged for you.
You could also make these arrangements through their Concierge Services, after your arrival.
In addition to using Priceline, we have also used the above, last method, many times, when traveling in Mexico. We have also found it to be safe and we have never experienced a problem, doing it that way! -- But, It sometimes, is more expensive than using Priceline!
Also, don't worry too much about having to learn Spanish or another language. Many people in hotels and in transportation, know how to speak English or another language!
