Mexico D.F., México: On the east side of the Tlatelolco, Plaza Of The Three Cultures or Plaza de las Tres Culturas, is the simple, fortress-like church, Iglesia de Santiago, erected in 1609. Construction of this Franciscan church was commissioned by Cortés in 1524. Its stones were taken from the temples at Tlatelolco, and the stonework and plain masonry were designed to fit in with the surrounding ruins and their stonework. This design of the stonework was in contrast to other native religious sites where colonial construction was done to obliterate their pre-existing structures, in order to convince the Mexicans that these were to be their new Templo Mayors, and religion. The mural of San Cristóbal above the church entrance is worth a look—it is the only image left uncovered from the church’s original interior. Like the rest of the D.F.’s centro histórico, the church is sinking at an estimated two inches per year. The convent, located next to the church, was once a college that the founders hoped would educate the native elite into the Catholic priesthood. The Spanish victory over the Aztecs at Tlatelolco was divinely attributed to Santiago, the patron saint of Spain. This church that the Spanish built was named in honour of Santiago andit is still used for worship. Inside there is a relief showing the saint, Santiago vanquishing his foes, some pointedly attired in Aztec-style feathered headdresses. What may be Mexico's biggest and oldest mural was discovered in an ancient water channel underneath the convent. It is believed to date from the 1530s.
