Heroica Nogales, more commonly known as Nogales, is a city and the county seat of the Municipality of Nogales. It is located on the northern border of the Mexican state of Sonora. The city is abutted on its north by the city of Nogales, Arizona, United States, across the U.S.-Mexico border.

The city's most important economic activities, in descending order, are industry, tourism, commerce, and farming.

Nogales is known for its recent enormous population growth which covers the hills along the central narrow north-south valley. Dispersed among the houses, the visitor will find a mixture of factories, stores, etc. In 2006, the southern half of the city experienced a modern urbanization development including shopping malls, wide avenues, and modern housing conglomerations.

At the center of Nogales, there is the Plaza de Benito Juarez. Here there is a statue with two leading figures designed by Spanish sculptor Alfredo Just. This is a tribute to Mexican President Benito Juarez, and the other is the "Monument to Ignorance", where a naked man who represents the Mexican people is fighting with a winged creature that represents ignorance.

Due to its location, Nogales is one of the most important ports of entry for U.S. tourists. The downtown area consists of bars, strip clubs, hotels, restaurants, and a large number of curio stores, which sell a large variety of artesanias (handicrafts, leather art, handmade flowers, clothes) brought from the deeper central and southern states of Mexico. Local dishes commonly available in restaurants include many types of antojitos (Mexican food) such as enchiladas, tacos, burritos with carne machaca (dried meat), menudo and tamales.

Because of its proximity to Tucson, Arizona, Nogales has become one of the largest providers of medical and dental care in Mexico for patients from the U.S., with care that is comparable in professionalism, equipment, and competency at prices that are 40% to 60% cheaper than in the USA.

Men also, don't be suprised if you are swarmed by recruiters moments after crossing the international border into Nogales, Sonora. These recruiters will be trying to connect you to have sex with prostitutes.

One such place called is called, "Bush Town." Of course, Canal Street has been known for that purpose for almost 100 years!

IMPORTANT NOTE: A passport or other WHTI-compliant travel document is necessary for U.S. and Canadian citizens traveling to Mexico. You may not be asked to present your passport if entering Mexico by land, but you will surely need to present one upon your return to the United States.

SO HAVE A PASSPORT WITH YOU!

If you are planning to visit Nogales and the Nogales area and you are coming from outside of Arizona, you could fly into Tucson and then rent a car. Nogales is about 60 miles, and a little over an hour drive from Tucson on of the scenic I-19 route. It is South from Tucson off exit #260 along the I-10 going through Tucson between Phoenix and El Paso.

On I 19, before crossing the border. you'll first arrive in Nogales, Arizona. The first of the "twin cities" that are in two different countries, that share the same name Nogales.

Unless you have Mexican Auto Insurance, do not drive into Mexico.

There are several parking lots on the American side of the border; which charge from $2 to $5 for 12 hours. It is an easy walk to the border entry from these lots.

We usually use Soto's Parking. There is also parking at: Eds Parking, which is probably the best border parking value in Nogales. It is located on Terrace street north of Crawford (behind the Shell gas station that is next door to the McDonalds. In addition to the usual border parking lots, the nearby Burger King, and McDonalds also offer border parking.

Shopping in Mexico is really fun! They have many hand-crafted items that are not available in the US. You buy handmade crafts, jewelry, leather goods, art, decor, pottery, basketry, rugs, paintings and even furniture for about half of the perceived value.

Once you cross the border, turn right at Campillo Street and walk about three blocks to Obregon Street where you can enjoy all the shopping fun you can handle. There are also quaint side streets everywhere with vendors set up in small stores or under structures of shade or even vendors that spread their wares on blankets on sidewalks.

Unlike the US where customers pay the price marked on the item, in Mexico shopping is a game about bargaining. You ask "how much" and they give you the "list price" which seems to differ at every marketplace. You will offer a price that is less than half of the asking price, and the vendor will then make a counter-offer. After the bargaining has run its course, you end up paying about half-price.

We take dollars, which they accept. But we keep it secure.

Not all places will take credit cards or checks.

There are also Mexican pharmacies where you can purchase prescription drugs at substantially less cost than in the US.

Be sure you have a valid prescription from you regular doctor specifically written for your usage. You may be asked for that information.

Also be sure to ask the pharmacist about the legalities of buying prescriptions in Mexico. Note: In many cases prescriptions are not required to buy, but officials may want to see them when coming back into the US.

Many Americans go Nogales to see dentists and get dental work since dental services are also less expensive in Mexico. If you know someone who has used Nogales dentists, ask them for recommendations.

Crossing The Border Into Nogales:

Unless you are traveling deeper into Mexico, it is best to park your vehicle on the American side of the border. Fees are nominal and the border crossing is close to parking areas. Remember you must have Mexican auto insurance in Mexico and by parking on the US side of the border, you won't have to worry about buying the separate insurance.

If you plan to make your visit any longer than 72 hours, you will need to procure a tarjeta de turista, known in the U.S. as a Mexican government tourist card. Remember that now a valid passport is required to re-enter the USA.

There are hotels and motels all along the way in nearby towns, as well as in Nogales.

We have some links to Priceline.com on this page since they can arrange all of your air flights, hotels and car.
