Uxmal (Oosh-mall) 600-1000ad. Uxmal is a fantastic example of Classic Mayan architecture. The Puuc style of Maya architecture predominates the city and it is thought by many experts to be the best example of such architecture located in the Puuc Highland area of Yucatan. Uxmal is located in the Santa Elena Valley to the south of the Pucc hill country in the southwestern part of the Mexico Yucatan Peninsula. Distance from Merida city to Uxmal about 78 km 48.5 miles or a little over an hour south of Mérida There is a wonderful legend about how Uxmal was founded by a dwarf who had many magical powers, thus one of the most popular sights to see at Uxmal is the "Temple Of The Dwarf" or "Temple Of The Magician", as it is often called. Uxmal's main structures cover an area about one-half mile in length by about 600 yards in width. You will need about one day to make a casual visit to the site and of course if you wish to study the site in more detail you will need to allow much more time than a day. Uxmal will have a different appearance during the months of May and June when there are rains in the area. The brush during the dry season is brown and during the rainy seasons it is a beautiful green. During the time of Uxmal, the people used a slash and burn type of agriculture and maize and beans were the chief food in the diet of those living in Uxmal. Chaac was probably the main god of those in Uxmal since there is no natural water source, such as a cenote in the area of Uxmal. Instead, the people had to dig reservoirs into the limestone rock and depend upon water from the rains to provide water for the city. We think it is very interesting that when Queen Elizabeth II visited Uxmal on February 27, 1975; for the inauguration of the Uxmal's sound & light show. When the show reached the point where they played the Maya prayer to Chaac, a sudden downpour fell upon the gathered dignitaries, even though it was during the middle of the dry season. Uxmal was ruled by the Xiu family and during the conquest the Xiu family were nobles. At the bottom of this page are two photographs of surviving members of the Xiu family. This page will feature "The Temple Of The Magician" which is also called "The Temple Of The Dwarf." Page Two will feature the Nunnery. Page Three will feature the rest of the area. Most of our photos were taken in August of 1988.

The Manuel Crescencio Rejón International Airport, formerly known as Mérida-Rejón Airport (IATA: MID, ICAO: MMMD) is the international airport located in the Mexican city of Mérida, Yucatán. It is located on the southern edge of the city. The airport handles both domestic and international flights, and is open 24 hours a day. We suggest flying into Mérida and staying in one of their many fine hotels when touring Dzibilchaltún and the ruins in the surrounding area.
There are many very good hotels and motels in the area, and if you need a place to stay; Priceline.com can arrange that for you. In fact, we think they are the best way to do it! We have personally, booked flights, hotels, and vacations, through Priceline.com and we can highly recommend them. Their website is very easy to use! We have some links to Priceline.com on this page, since they can arrange all of your air flights, hotels and car. We of course, appreciate your use of the advertising on our pages, since it helps us to keep our pages active. We also have links on this page, that will connect you with several of the best hotels in Mérida. Hotels that we have personally used! We could, also suggest getting a hotel, and then letting them arrange for either a car, or a tour of Mérida. If you call their Concierge Services, ahead of your arrival, all of this can be pre-arranged for you. We have used this method, many times, when traveling in Mexico. We have found it to be safe and it works!!! We have never experienced a problem, doing it this way!
