Coba (Koh - bah) (Water Stired By The Wind) Gives you the Indiana Jones experience of truely being in the middle of an unexplored jungle. It is covered with a lush, green canopy of foliage overhead that reminds you of a green cloud over the jungle floor. Macaws, Toucans, and Motmots add a splash of rich color to the green, sacred ceiba trees that are hung with spanish moss. The air is moist, with spicy, musky, ripe jungle smells of the rich growth of plant life everywhere. Monkeys can be heard screeching and not too far away deer and jaguars are slippin in and out amongst the rich jungle growth. George used to be a beekeeper and this area facinated him because beekeeping is a local industry in this area and every once in a while we came across beekeeping operations in the jungle that are carried on by the local inhabitants.

Coba is about 80 square miles in size and yet very little of it is restored. It is one of the earliest important Mayan Classic period sites in NE Yucatan and it dates from A. D. 623 to the Late post-Classic Period of the 14th to 15th centuries. At least 32 stela have been discovered and 23 of them have carving on them. In addition there are several sacheob or raised roads at Coba of which sixteen are connected to outlying centers of population. The longest road is sixty miles long and it runs from Coba to Yaxuna, SW of Chichen Itza.

The Castillo At Coba faces west toward the Lake Macanxoc. This pyramid is part of the central group at Coba. The area of this ruins is about 1650 feet east and west and 975 feet north and south. The Castillo is a stepped pyramid with a small temple at the top. The pyramid is about 129 feet east and west and 166 feet north and south. It is 78 feet high. It has nine terraces with inset rounded corners. The stairway continues to the foot of the seventh terrace, beyond which is a wall that rises to the platform that supports the small temple at the top. Where the walls are missing there appears to be a wall of earlier construction. There is a small temple at the top platform with a single door to the temple.

The Castillo At Nohoch Mul is a group of ruins located about a half mile to the NE of the Castillo At Coba. The Castillo At Nohoch Mul faces Sw toward Structure X and Stela 20. It measures about 180 feet NE-SW by 198 feet at its base. It is 78 feet high. It is of Classic Mayan Structure and it resembles those at Tikal in Guatemala. Its Great Stairway is about 36 feet wide and it rises on the southern side of the pyramid to the foot of the first terrace where two smaller stairs split and branch off to the platform on the top. The temple is of the Mayan East Coast design of Tulum and suggests that it may have been built after A. D. 1200. On the face of the temple there are two sunken panels containing figures of the Diving God similar to Tulum.

We suggest getting a hotel in Cancún and then letting them arrange either a car or a tour of Cancún and/or the surrounding areas such as, Coba. It is about 96 miles from Cancún to Coba.

Cancún International Airport (IATA: CUN, ICAO: MMUN) is located in Cancún, Quintana Roo, on the Caribbean coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. It is Mexico's second busiest airport, after Mexico City International Airport in Mexico City, but it is the largest in Mexico and Latin America for International passengers.
