Chetumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico: (chatooml) , a city is on the western side of Chetumal Bay near the mouth of the Rio Hondo. Chetumal is the capital of Quintana Roo State, Mexico. The official GPS Coordinates are: 18.50 North, 88.29 West. Chetumal is a major import center and free port as well as an export point for the hardwoods of the region, including cedar and mahogany. Chetumal is Mexico's main port of trade with Belize. The city is very modern, since two hurricanes in the 1940s leveled the entire town. Then Chetumal was devestated a third time in 1955 by Hurricane Janet and it has been rebuilt since that date. During Pre-Columbian times a Mayan city called Chetumal was the capital of a Maya state also called Chetumal, which controlled the southern quarter of modern Quintana Roo and the north-east portion of Belize. The original city of Chetumal is believed to have been on the other side of the Rio Hondo, in modern day Belize, not at the site of the modern day city of Chetumal. During the Spanish conquest of Yucatn the Maya state of Chetumal fought off several Spanish expeditions before finally being conquered during the late 16th century. The current site of Chetumal was established as a Mexican port in 1898, originally under the name Payo Obispo. The name was changed to Chetumal in 1936. Chetumal is the home of the Museo de la Cultura Maya or Museum Of The Mayan Culture. Address: Av. Hroes and Calle Mahatma Gandhi, Chetumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico Phone: 983/832-6838 . This museum is dedicated to the complex world of the Maya. Exhibits explain Maya social classes, politics, and customs; Maya architecture; their use of plants for medicinal and domestic purposes; and the Maya calendar. To us the most impressive display is the three-story Sacred Ceiba Tree. The Maya use this symbol to explain the relationship between the cosmos and earth. The first floor represents the roots of the tree where the Maya underworld, Xibalba, reigns. The middle floor is the tree trunk, known as Earth, or Middle World, home to humans and all their trappings. The top floor is the leaves and branches and the 13 heavens of the cosmic Otherworld. It is open Tues.-Thurs. 9-7, Fri. and Sat. 9-8, Sun. 9-2. The population of Chetumal was small (about 5,000 in 1950) until the construction of highways linking it to the rest of Mexico in the 1960s and 1970s; the city has since boomed to over a half million due to the substantial emigration from Belize and other parts of Mexico. When you look at our pictures of Chetumal Bay, look in the background and you can see the country of Belize across the bay. The bay is really the opening to the mouth of the Rio Hondo and The New River. Both of these rivers are important river routes to several small villages and to several ruins such as Lamanai.in Belize. The site of Santa Rita, located across the bay in the northern part of Belize, has been occupied throughout the Mayan Civilization and on into present times. Today the site is literally part of the town of Corozal in the country of Belize. Archaeologists theorize that Santa Rita was probably the ancient and important Mayan city of Chetumal for which the modern city is named. It is noteworthy that manatees are frequently found in the rivers near Bahia de Chetumal and in the bay also. We were at Chetumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico on February 5 and 6 of 2004.
