We wish to thank Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia for some of the information on this web page. We share images & information with Wikipedia. The Church and former monastery of Santo Domingo de Guzmn or (Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzmn); is a Baroque ecclesiastical building complex in Oaxaca, Oaxaca, Mexico. The buildings include a Catholic Church & Sanctuary as well as an extensive system of courtyards, cloisters, & rooms; that formerly made up the monastery In 1857, the period of the revolutionary wars, the buildings were turned over to military use, and from 1866 to 1902 they served as a barracks. The church was restored to religious use in 1938, but the monastery was made available to the Universidad Autnoma Benito Jurez de Oaxaca. In 1972 it became a regional museum, and in 1993 the decision was taken to undertake its full restoration. This was completed in 1999. The architect responsible was Juan Urquiaga. The church is highly decorated with its interior containing more than 60,000 sheets of 23.5-karat gold leaf. The parts of the church that formerly houseded the monastery; now house the Cultural Centre of Oaxaca, which was founded, with the help of Oaxacan-born artist, Francisco Toledo. A beautiful and impressive part of the Cultural Centre of Oaxaca Museum houses an important collection of pre-Columban artefacts, among them the contents of Tomb 7 from the nearby Zapotec archaeological site of Monte Albn. This regional museum coveris the time period from nomadic hunters to the high pre-Hispanic civilization represented by Monte Alban. This is a "must see" visit because of the building itself and because the museum contains essential information about the pre-Hispanic past of the region as well as providing a chance to see the rich treasure trove found by archaeologist Alfonso Caso in Tomb 7 of Monte Alban. If you visit Monte Albn, then a must see, is the gold in the museum! Nearby, is the former monastery garden; which is now an Ethnobotanical Garden, containing a large collection of plants that are native to the Oaxaca region. The Church and former monastery of Santo Domingo de Guzmn is located about half a kilometer north of the central squares of the city, the Zcalo and the Alameda, and the connecting street. This area is a very popular place for both tourists and the local residents to visit. On this page we are showing a few photos of the Santo Domingo Monastery and the treasure of Monte Alban Archaeological Ruins Tomb 7. The lighting in the Tomb Seven Display Room is very dim and the display lights are in a position that causes reflections from the display cases. Flash photography is prohibited. This makes photography almost impossible. We suggest digital cameras or high speed film when taking photographs in this area. This would be an area where a tripod would be helpful for slow exposure time photography and the extra fee for the use of a tripod would be worth the money that you would need to pay. If you plan to photograph this area allow extra time into your schedule.
