Monte Alban is built at the junction of three broad valleys, across from the Atoyac stream, lays a series of large hills. The largest of these hills is nearly 400 meters above sea level. It was on the top of this mountain, which the Zapotecs leveled off and built into a great ceremonial city in about the year 500 ad. This center once ruled the entire region. The city is now known as Monte Alban. Monte Alban, or "White Mountains" in Spanish, was formerly called Danibaan (Sacred Mountain). No visit to Oaxaca can be considered complete without visiting Monte Alban.
There were many beautiful white blossomed trees called "Tree Morning Glory," Ipomoea arborescens, growing in the area. These trees are also called, Palo del Muerto, Palo Santo Trees, or Trompillo.

The sign near Stela 15 reads:
"This unique horizontal stela shows one of the few narrative texts that have been found in its original context, most likely due to the fact that it was constructed during the later period of occupation, Monte Alban IIIB-IV (600-800AD). The engravings of this monolith include a scene, two short texts and various isolated glyphs, in which can be observed calender names and personages of the governing noble class. The texts begin with a glyph of the year and its bearer. IT appears that the central text refers to a ritual representation in a scene where the governor of Monte Alban, called 5 Cane intervenes. The personage, with a nose plug and reclining on an elongated piece of furniture, dedicates and offering, while a shaman name 7 Brush who is transformed in to a bird, presents him with a prisoner. Sitting to the left is another individual with a nose plug called 6 Earthquake, who seems to establish the genealogy of Lord 5 Cane. It is possible that the monument commemorates Lord 5 Cane's ascendancy to power, legitimizes his ancestry, and celebrates a military victory by the way of a ball game and the sacrifice of a prisoner."
