We have been awaiting the opening of the ruins of Atzompa for several years. Atzompa is only four kilometers away from the Monte Alban Archaeological Zone.

On September 18, 2012; President Felipe Calderon inaugurated the Monumental de Santa Maria Atzompa. Now Atzompa is open to the public.

Archaeologists have known of Atzompa for several years. One of its Zapoteca ballcourts was discovered in the 1930's. It is now known that this ballcourt is larger than the ballcourt at Monte Alban, which has been considered the largest in the Mesoamericas. Now the ballcourt at Atzompa is considered the largest.

The ballcourt is 45 meters long! The ballcourt at Monte Alban is a little over 40 meters long. It is thought that this ballcourt was the

It is thought that the elite of Monte Alban settled Atzompa between 650 and 850 AD.

INAH is currently conducting exploration, and consolidation tasks at another 39 structures found in Atzompa that include two more ball courts of smaller dimensions, & these ballcourts are surrounded pyramidal structures. The two smaller courts are secondary and probably used for training ball players.

The presence of so many ball courts at Atzompa represents a mystery for archaeologists. Many Mesoamerican cities only had one ball court.

Another interesting feature of the Atzompa ballcourt is that it has niches on each of its 4 corners.

Archaeologists now say that this was principal ball court for the Monte Alban area, rather than the ball court that is in the Monte Alban site itself. This ball court is also situated such that the players would have had a full view of the city located above them.

Some other interesting structures have been excavated including structures called; the Casa de Oriental (East House), the Casa de Altares (House of the Altars), and the Central Shrine of Atzompa; which is larger than its counterpart in Monte Alban. Next to these structure can be found is a complex of domestic units, sunken patios, and a pyramidal platform.

Atzompa was initially explored in the 1930s by Jorge Acosta. He was only able to examine the ends of the large ball court. He speculated that the constructions at this site were ceremonial and defensive in nature, constructed in the 7th to 9th centuries to protect a growing Monte Alban.

INAH archaeology coordinator Nelly Robles Garcia has said that Atzompa was built in the last occupation stage; “architecture found here is highly worked, stone and lime used masterly, better than the work at Monte Alban Main Plaza; its conservation state is good”.

A funerary complex more than 1,100 years old, consisting of three burial chambers, has also been discovered in the pre-Hispanic site of Atzompa in Oaxaca.
