We also donate to Wikipedia, & would suggest that others do the same. Sasabe is a small unincorporated border community in the Altar Valley of southern Pima County, Arizona, United States. It hosts a little-used United States�Mexico border crossing. On an average, only 165 cars, trucks, or pedestrians per day passed through the Sasabe port of entry in 2011. Sasabe, Arizona is much smaller than its sister community, El S�sabe, Sonora, which is known for its burnt-adobe brickyards. A post office called Sasabe has been in operation since 1905. Sasabe is a name derived from a Native American language meaning "head valley". Sasabe is best known for its historic Rancho de la Osa guest ranch, formerly the headquarters of a three million acre Spanish land grant. Some ranch buildings reportedly date to the late 17th century. The guest ranch opened in 1921. Guests have included Presidents Franklin Roosevelt and Lyndon Johnson. Much of the area north and east of Sasabe is within the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge. In 2006, 3,500 acres of the refuge that border Mexico east of Sasabe were closed to public entry due to problems with smugglers and unauthorized border crossings. Sasabe is about halfway between Nogales and Lukeville, the Sasabe port connects two tiny towns, El Sasabe, population 2,500, on the Sonora side, and Sasabe, population 11, on the Arizona side. To get to Sasabe you will drive 20 miles southwest from Tucson to Robles Junction and then 45 miles straight south on Arizona 286. On the way, you will pass through vast expanses of barren desert scrubland, and the jagged Baboquivari Mountains rising in the distance to the west. El Sasabe is a poor town of jumbled streets and run-down adobe buildings. The town depends mostly on an adobe-brick factory for its livelihood. It is also a major staging area for illegal immigrants and smugglers preparing to cross into the U.S.
Although the Sasabe port has hardly any traffic, ironically, it sits in the middle of one of the busiest illegal-immigrant and drug-smuggling corridors on the border.
