The Graeco-Roman Museum was founded in 1891 by the Italian Archeologist Botti.
The museum was originally in the apartment of Shari Rosetha. In 1894 it was moved to its present location.
The museums 20 connecting rooms, arranged around a central garden contain statues, stelae, sarcophagi, and a temple dedicated to Sobek. There are an additional 7 rooms to visit making a total of 27 spectacular display rooms. They house the legacy of the ancient Alexandrian civilization.
The museum is a wonderful synthesis of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman Culture. The museum and its exhibits provide a fascinating record of civilization in the process of change; as its religions merged and society evolved.
In Alexandria, the Graeco-Roman and Pharaonic religions mingled in the cult of Serapis. Then also; the shift from the pagan religions to Christianity occurred. All of this change can be seen in the Graeco-Roman Museum as we view the various exhibits and collections of rare Greek and Roman relics and coins (about 40 thousand pieces in total.; which include mummies, Hellenistic statues, busts of Roman emperors, Tangara figurines, and early Christian antiquities).
The collection ranges from about the Third Century B.C. to the Seventh Century A.D.
We were greatly impressed by this museum as it showed through the art of the times, the flow or movement of the shift from the pagan religions to Christianity. Perhaps, the Alabaster Statue of "The Good Shepherd" demonstrated this movement with the most feeling of the change that took place.
The Alabaster Statue of "The Good Shepherd" is an extremely rare statue depicting Christ standing as a Sheppard, carrying a lamb on one shoulder and surrounded on both sides by little lambs. This statue represents the care that Jesus Christ bestowed on believers. The statue is carved of white grayish marble and it dates back to the 3rd century AD. It was found in Marsa Matrouh, about 180 miles west of Alexandria.
Marsa Matrouh is a beach area which dates back to the days of Alexander, the Macedonian, when it was known as "Paraetonium" and also as "Amunia". It is said that Alexander the Great stopped there during his historical expedition to pay tribute, and sacrifice, to the god Amun, at Siwa, so that he becomes Amun's son and his rule be a historical continuation of the pharaohs.
We are going to show you a few of the various displays that you can see at the museum. We are not be able to discuss what all of the displays are about. There are just too many to see. We were limited in our photography; as we were using older digital cameras, and flash is not permitted in museums.
The Borg El Arab Airport (IATA: HBE, ICAO: HEBA) is the airport now serving Alexandria, Egypt as of December 2009 when all traffic was transferred from the Alexandria International Airport.
It is located about 40 km (25 mi) southwest of Alexandria, in Borg El Arab (alternate spellings: Borg Al Arab, Burg El Arab). The airport also serves the nearby areas of the Nile Delta.
It is possible to fly directly to Alexandria or to fly into Cairo International Airport and from there to the Borg El Arab Airport.
